I've wrangled with setting that windows mail up all day and keep getting that windows box people keep talking about. Its really starting to hurt my feelins” 2:04:08 PM 11/25/07 “Those Micro$quish application programmers have a twisted sense of humor, don't they? The words they always use in error messages can never be found in the whoop-ti-doo "Microsoft Knowledge Base".... but when you do a Google search there are 200,000 people on the 'Net raising hell about it, LOL” 2:46:24 PM 11/25/07 6:17:52 PM 11/25/07 “A Thanksgiving TR - went to my mother's and she wanted lots of pictures of our 4 yo out on the trail. On previous visits, they wouldn't print out 4 per page on her paper so we would do 2 at a time and she figured out how to put the paper back in to do the other 2. But now they wouldn't print out at all and it would take 30 minutes to come up with an error message. My wife said to go to the store and buy new anti-virus software. Note that the machine had two USB 1.0 ports, no CD burner, and no DVD reader. I believe it also had a jack to plug in a Morse Code key as an optional I/O device. I went to Staples and bought anti-virus software as requested, bundled with Windows Vista, DVD burner, etc. in a suspiciously large box. :) Now the problem is getting old data off the old computer. I did buy a USB floppy drive to extract the six word processing files she updates yearly. I also got a flash drive that didn't say it was USB 2.0 at Wal-Mart, but the old box won't light it up at all. Fortunately the relevant photos were still on the memory card and now they print out four per page. With Windows Vista, my mother (did I mention she's 76?) can print them herself.” 8:12:07 AM 11/26/07 “If both PCs have a NIC (Network Interface Card), you could use that to transfer the data from the old computer to the new computer. If you are using a router or a switch, you can plug a regular ethernet cable from each computer into the router or switch. If you want to plug each computer directly together using the NICs, you'll need a cross-over ethernet cable. You should be able to find one of these at your local computer store, Best Buy, Staples or go to cablestogo.com ... should be about 5 bucks. In the Welcome Center on the Vista computer, select "Transfer files and settings". This has worked like a charm for me on several clients switching from an XP computer to a Vista computer. Of course, if you know what files you would like to transfer, you can go through the manual process. Takes longer, but is certainly do-able by someone with the knowledge of what to transfer.” 8:29:18 AM 11/26/07 “Hmm, I didn't check the old computer for Ethernet but I'd seriously doubt it (felt fortunate the NEW one had a dial-up modem in addition to the E-net)” 10:23:49 AM 11/26/07 “We have Vista on the new laptop and someone said that might been what the problem with the printer installation was. We took the printer off...and there were 3 drivers..does that sound right for one printer?” 10:46:54 AM 11/26/07 “my beef with vista has to do with previewing photos... on windows xp one could view them in "filmstrip" mode, which was nice and big. the biggest you can see them on vista is "very large" unless you double-click them and view them in the viewer. and every once in a while the stupid thing tells me i don't have permission to do something (like update my hp printer driver, for example). i hate being told i don't have permission to do something!” 11:43:47 AM 11/26/07 “So what is the general feeling about Vista if you are buying a new computer but plan on using your old software and peripherals? Or should I just go with XP?” 11:31:45 AM 12/05/07 “You need to do some research and see if your stuff will work with Vista. There are a fair number of folks reporting that their old stuff won't work. However XP is a known quantity.” 11:35:03 AM 12/05/07 “I've heard all the rumors, I was just wondering if the latest versions of Vista had worked out any kinks. My stuff probably won't work since I haven't bought a new computer in 4 years :). So its XP all the way, baby, unless I hear that Vista has fixed itself.” 11:41:06 AM 12/05/07 “I am having issues with a new laptop I have, however I don't know if it is a Vista problem. Bought a router so I could go wireless with the SBC internet service. All was well until I hooked up a new HP wireless printer. Once that conection was established, the wireless conection to the internet was lost. I tried re-establishing the wireless signal to the laptop and the router software keeps telling me that is cannot find a wireless signal. Anyone have a clue?” 11:42:36 AM 12/05/07 “we got a new laptop a few weeks ago that has vista. the OS itself is taking some getting used to. It was a little tricky tweeking what I call, the main computer (which runs xp) and the kids computer (which also runs xp)and the wireless network..but not terribly hard. It works without any problems. Program wise I installed my old Microsoft Office Pro on the Vista system too..however I didn't install Outlook. Its now called Windows Mail and apparently going backwards in the mail dept doesn't work. Excel, PP, Word, Frontpage all hum along as normal.” 11:43:14 AM 12/05/07 “I have heard that Vista eliminates the ability to initiate a remote desktop connection, remotely. There are other options like VNC, but if that's true, yet another example of over-zealous security reducing productivity.” 12:17:24 PM 12/05/07 “I bought the vista. Funny thing about dell.com. On their cheapie desktops you can start with no monitor at a certain price then add the stuff you want or you can start with a monitor at a higher price ($230 more) but you get a $100 discount. What funny is that if you do the second option but select no monitor you reduce the price of the computer by $170. So you get the same computer with the same options for $40 less if you use the second option and choose no monitor. You'd think a computer company would be able to catch something like that.” 12:29:05 PM 12/05/07 true “You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to computers running Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Basic N, or Windows Vista Home Premium, and you can only create outgoing connections from those editions of Windows Vista. You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to computers running Windows XP Home Edition.” 12:29:58 PM 12/05/07 “i'm really worried, everything is breaking down on my 'puter and i'm afraid of vista!” 3:51:11 PM 12/05/07 “Sux. Add a good feature, take it away. Ive always used VNC anyway. So RD is still OK on the pro editions?” 4:07:12 PM 12/05/07 “one way to get everybody to upgrade to Pro no doubt” 4:59:14 PM 12/05/07 “Anyone trying the Windows 7 operating system? I installed it on my laptop and like it so far. I'm not a big Vista fan.” 5:32:09 AM 8/13/09 “It looks pretty good. I installed it on a partition. I'm holding off doing too much on it though as you'll need to do a clean install when the final version comes out.” 5:35:52 AM 8/13/09 “I stayed with XP because Vista wouldn't support some of the software I use. So I'm a bit skeerd of anything Windows since XP. Think I'll wait a bit.” 5:38:26 AM 8/13/09 “ ”2:39:15 PM 3/03/10
