Windows Vista Sucks Monkey Butt

just bought a new laptop with WV pre-installed. it runs quickly and smoothly (altho im sure that has more to do with the processor than the OS) and graphics are sharp, but it is not user-friendly, at least to me. i cant get the mouse i bought for it to work, and everything seems to work differently than old windows

“I just ordered a laptop from Dell for the wife. I didn't want Vista and I found that if you go to the business side, they still offer XP as an option. You can't find XP on the consumer side.

I tried Vista and found half of my software wouldn't run on it. I would have to buy new versions Roxio, Ulead, etc, to get it to work.

By next year XP wont be an option anymore.”

“I think that they sell XP on the business side because the businesses have to have time to test new OS first before all the IT/IS dept approve it. My company has not finished test yet so we have to use XP for now. I got Vista for my personal laptop and it's fine. All the software companies are catching up and that's what is causing me frustration, but that's software world for ya and I found workarounds with Vista's Program Compatibility Wizard. I also turned off the User Account Control, which could be helpful, but not for me and the type of user I am. I finally got my Sprint Treo phone tethered to my laptop after working with Sprint support on a work around. My XP laptop got stolen out of my house and I was going to have to pay 200 more for an XP laptop and got a sweet deal for $500 bucks for laptop with Vista. I acted too quickly on the deal and didn't think about the repercussions, but now I got it worked out finally. But, yes. Microsoft does know what they are doing, and no offense to those on this board, but 90% of MS users don't know the tip of the iceberg when it comes to using a PC. It's just point and click to most people and when the point and click doesn't work right, the blame's gotta be on anything except the operator... no offense tho - I have an advantage cause I work in the industry...”

XP = eXPerience... remember... give a mindless twink the admin account for their pc so they can screw it up and catch viruses. of course they "fixed" this in vista (by doing what smart users have done for years now) but it's just one of many examples of how microsoft uses YOU as their little science experiment.

they do NOT know what they are doing. they make it up as they go along. this is a company that does not innovate. it copies. this means something has to come first before they can do it second and appear to know what they are doing.

“Yeah, CB. Products should be designed for the user. You're right. Engineers will be engineers in designing products. However, where most people know how to change their oil on the car and know the basics of a car; most people don't know how a computer runs and how software works. My opinion is that it is the nature of the computer beast. Computers are foreign to us. Cars are not as much. Is this true? Why or why not?

“I'm just putting together a presentation for our customer User Group mtg next week... one of my graphs is an analysis from the support department regarding what category our support requests fall into..

The OVERWHELMING majority of calls are due to what we call "cockpit error" :), meaning, the problem wasn't with the hardware, software or network, but the customer didn't know what they were doing!

Kinda' sad, actually. Everytime a user doesn't know their backside from a hole in the ground they blame the vendor / developer / supplier.

CB, there are tons of educational / training CD's available to help you learn more about PC's & software... they even have them available at my local Blockbuster & Hollywood Video stores, maybe you should consider getting one & watching it instead of blaming Microsoft because you don't know what the *#%#$ you're doing. Just a thought.

I wasn't blaming customers, JimmySan. What I was trying to do was encourage people, CB in this case, to actually learn a little bit about technology before they blame others because they don't know what they're doing. Point is, it can be the greatest technology in the world but if you don't know how to use it you're going to think it sucks. Yes, some software does suck, however it is amazing how much of the time it's a user problem, not a software problem.

“you need a totally different language. my mother is a complete loss. she can't figure out how to get her pictures from her walmart photo cd off of the cd and onto her computers "memory" (she calls it this but she means her hard drive) so it can get to her email (yahoo!). she tells me her internet is slow on a regular basis and has been conned into changing providers like 4 times and currently was tricked into thinking that she could ditch the cablemodem for a high-speed $9.99/month service that, when I got to her place, turned out to be a modem with access to a web accelerator/cache. she has every right to expect these services to be easier to use than they are. she used to complain ther her computer was slow so she would put the disk labeled "recovery cd" into the drive and it would put the computer back but then all her pictures were gone from her "memory". there have been times when i wanted to give her an etch-a-sketch and tell her it is a laptop. still, i don't see these as "user errors". the pc was sold and marketed to her with the seller knowing full well who she was and what her level of sophistication was. i don't have a problem with tiat, but i certainly am not going to say she is at fault for now being born in a generation raised seeped in technology and lingo.”

“Your Mom has fallen prey to sales people, I can't defend them at all & wouldn't want to, but that doesn't mean the technology isn't any good. It just wasn't designed to primarily appeal to people of her generation. You may remember years ago when MS came out with the "Bob" OS in an effort to have something more more simple and "user friendly", it was a massive failure.

We have a similar thing going on with my mother-in-law so I know what you're going through. We got her a couple simple training CD's & that helped a little, but fact remains it's "relatively" new stuff for people in her age group, and she's not going to be as comfortable with it as we might like.

In CB's case, he starts out saying that "Vista sucks Monkey Butt", but then he admits he isn't very computer lierate, and "doesn't like it". "Doesn't like it" is a helluva lot different than "it sucks Monkey Butt". That's my point... a lot of the problem is him, not the OS. That doesn't mean the OS is perfect, but if you don't know what you're doing, the first thing to do is try to learn a little before you start throwing rocks.

That's very possible, in this arena I'd never argue that. Most of my career I've had to deal with numb-nuts users who wanted to blame Bill Gates, me, software developers, the full moon and everything / everybody else because they refused to learn anything new. Gets a little tiring after awhile.
