Something about the drivers not being mature. I've got the Vista express upgrade in a box downstairs where it can do no harm. Remember what the comic said about virgins: "Hell! Let Captain Kirk go where no man has gone before!"” 1:48:54 PM 4/12/07 “PS Sorry about the monkey, and your butt.” 1:50:24 PM 4/12/07 “Microsoft knows what they are doing. Might not look like it to you, but they do. I'd wait a year or so before upgrading. last edited: 4/12/07 2:06:33 PM” 1:58:23 PM 4/12/07 “I just ordered a laptop from Dell for the wife. I didn't want Vista and I found that if you go to the business side, they still offer XP as an option. You can't find XP on the consumer side. I tried Vista and found half of my software wouldn't run on it. I would have to buy new versions Roxio, Ulead, etc, to get it to work. By next year XP wont be an option anymore.” 2:02:04 PM 4/12/07 “I think that they sell XP on the business side because the businesses have to have time to test new OS first before all the IT/IS dept approve it. My company has not finished test yet so we have to use XP for now. I got Vista for my personal laptop and it's fine. All the software companies are catching up and that's what is causing me frustration, but that's software world for ya and I found workarounds with Vista's Program Compatibility Wizard. I also turned off the User Account Control, which could be helpful, but not for me and the type of user I am. I finally got my Sprint Treo phone tethered to my laptop after working with Sprint support on a work around. Turns out that the work around is actually a better method than how I tethered it to old XP laptop!” 2:09:19 PM 4/12/07 “HP, My XP laptop got stolen out of my house and I was going to have to pay 200 more for an XP laptop and got a sweet deal for $500 bucks for laptop with Vista. I acted too quickly on the deal and didn't think about the repercussions, but now I got it worked out finally. But, yes. Microsoft does know what they are doing, and no offense to those on this board, but 90% of MS users don't know the tip of the iceberg when it comes to using a PC. It's just point and click to most people and when the point and click doesn't work right, the blame's gotta be on anything except the operator... no offense tho - I have an advantage cause I work in the industry...” 2:14:10 PM 4/12/07 “im not very computer literate, so yea, smokygirl has a point. but things should be user-friendly. you dont have to be an auto mechanic to be able to drive a car, i shouldnt have to be bill farking gates to operate my computer” 2:52:10 PM 4/12/07 “if you market something to the mass of mindless twinks out there you should expect to have to build to the lowest common denominator. they tried this with XP... real gem there... XP = eXPerience... remember... give a mindless twink the admin account for their pc so they can screw it up and catch viruses. of course they "fixed" this in vista (by doing what smart users have done for years now) but it's just one of many examples of how microsoft uses YOU as their little science experiment. they do NOT know what they are doing. they make it up as they go along. this is a company that does not innovate. it copies. this means something has to come first before they can do it second and appear to know what they are doing. last edited: 4/12/07 3:32:00 PM” 3:31:23 PM 4/12/07 “"We will add your technological distinctiveness to our own." -- Bill the Gates [fetch-decode-execute-splat]” 3:53:47 PM 4/12/07 “I was about to upgrade, but the upgrade advisor showed that my soundcard isn't compatible. Decided to wait until there is a new driver out. how fast does it run on the Pentium Ds?? I have a Pentium D CPU 3.2 Ghz. Uhmmm...2 GB RAM. anyone know?” 4:09:42 PM 4/12/07 “Yeah, CB. Products should be designed for the user. You're right. Engineers will be engineers in designing products. However, where most people know how to change their oil on the car and know the basics of a car; most people don't know how a computer runs and how software works. My opinion is that it is the nature of the computer beast. Computers are foreign to us. Cars are not as much. Is this true? Why or why not? ...why reinvent the wheel if it works? Is that copying? Is there another OS to compare to, to prove that Microsoft doesn't know what they are doing? Don't say Mac, please. Ugh.. by the way, I've got to get my face away from this computer.” 4:56:50 PM 4/12/07 “I'm just putting together a presentation for our customer User Group mtg next week... one of my graphs is an analysis from the support department regarding what category our support requests fall into.. The OVERWHELMING majority of calls are due to what we call "cockpit error" :), meaning, the problem wasn't with the hardware, software or network, but the customer didn't know what they were doing! Kinda' sad, actually. Everytime a user doesn't know their backside from a hole in the ground they blame the vendor / developer / supplier. CB, there are tons of educational / training CD's available to help you learn more about PC's & software... they even have them available at my local Blockbuster & Hollywood Video stores, maybe you should consider getting one & watching it instead of blaming Microsoft because you don't know what the *#%#$ you're doing. Just a thought. last edited: 4/12/07 6:52:47 PM” 6:50:44 PM 4/12/07 “That's right wanderer... it's the customers fault. Damn dirty bastards. These applications would run so much better without those customers. ...then again networks would run so much better without those crummy applications clogging them up.” 6:57:12 PM 4/12/07 “CB admits he's not a PC genius. “im not very computer literate" I wasn't blaming customers, JimmySan. What I was trying to do was encourage people, CB in this case, to actually learn a little bit about technology before they blame others because they don't know what they're doing. Point is, it can be the greatest technology in the world but if you don't know how to use it you're going to think it sucks. Yes, some software does suck, however it is amazing how much of the time it's a user problem, not a software problem. last edited: 4/12/07 7:07:28 PM” 7:05:05 PM 4/12/07 “you need a totally different language. my mother is a complete loss. she can't figure out how to get her pictures from her walmart photo cd off of the cd and onto her computers "memory" (she calls it this but she means her hard drive) so it can get to her email (yahoo!). she tells me her internet is slow on a regular basis and has been conned into changing providers like 4 times and currently was tricked into thinking that she could ditch the cablemodem for a high-speed $9.99/month service that, when I got to her place, turned out to be a modem with access to a web accelerator/cache. she has every right to expect these services to be easier to use than they are. she used to complain ther her computer was slow so she would put the disk labeled "recovery cd" into the drive and it would put the computer back but then all her pictures were gone from her "memory". there have been times when i wanted to give her an etch-a-sketch and tell her it is a laptop. still, i don't see these as "user errors". the pc was sold and marketed to her with the seller knowing full well who she was and what her level of sophistication was. i don't have a problem with tiat, but i certainly am not going to say she is at fault for now being born in a generation raised seeped in technology and lingo.” 7:23:34 PM 4/12/07 “It's just point and click to most people and when the point and click doesn't work right, the blame's gotta be on anything except the operator - smokygirl 2:14:10 PM 4/12/07 but that's the point isn't it. The better the system the the fewer people have problems using it. Bad operating system, more 'operator error'.” 7:35:51 PM 4/12/07 “Your Mom has fallen prey to sales people, I can't defend them at all & wouldn't want to, but that doesn't mean the technology isn't any good. It just wasn't designed to primarily appeal to people of her generation. You may remember years ago when MS came out with the "Bob" OS in an effort to have something more more simple and "user friendly", it was a massive failure. We have a similar thing going on with my mother-in-law so I know what you're going through. We got her a couple simple training CD's & that helped a little, but fact remains it's "relatively" new stuff for people in her age group, and she's not going to be as comfortable with it as we might like. In CB's case, he starts out saying that "Vista sucks Monkey Butt", but then he admits he isn't very computer lierate, and "doesn't like it". "Doesn't like it" is a helluva lot different than "it sucks Monkey Butt". That's my point... a lot of the problem is him, not the OS. That doesn't mean the OS is perfect, but if you don't know what you're doing, the first thing to do is try to learn a little before you start throwing rocks. last edited: 4/12/07 7:40:59 PM” 7:35:53 PM 4/12/07 “Microsoft marketing... Easier Safer More Entertaining The "Wow" starts now Experience Windows Vista 100 reasons why everyone's so speechless #1. It makes using your PC a breeze. . . . This is not marketing that excludes any generation.” 7:40:56 PM 4/12/07 “I'm sure you always believe everything you read from every manufacturer, right? Why is it Microsofts fault if some people refuse to learn something new?” 7:43:27 PM 4/12/07 “As a general rule the problem can be found somewhere between the keyboard and the chair.” 7:47:18 PM 4/12/07 “i don't but clearly the vast money-spending majority does. that's why most software companies spend so much of their annual sales on marketing (often more than they spend on r&d). the return on investment for marketing is generally higher.” 7:59:57 PM 4/12/07 “i ADMIT im not very computer literate HOWEVER that said, i find vista more difficult to navigate and much less intuitive than earlier versions of windows. before, whenever windows upgraded, it always seemed like an improvement. things worked a little faster and more conveniently. this one seems like a step back. i JUST BOUGHT the computer yesterday. i PLAN ON LOOKING INTO SOME TUTORIALS. give me a chance before condemning me for a dumbass im sure its mostly a matter of newness (except for the mouse problem). once i figure it out ill probably like it much better.” 8:08:40 PM 4/12/07 “Google may yet make performing a task simple by serving up specific apps (once again) to the new terminal --the modern web browser. ("Spinning wheel, got ta go 'round") Your computer will become a slightly smarter-than-last-go'round dumb terminal that does what you want through the web browser.” 8:11:40 PM 4/12/07 “and jesus christ, wanderer. leave it up to you to start hurling the insults. the thread title is obviously humorous, and i even admit alot of the problem is me. i wasnt "blaming" anybody. i was giving my initial impression of how the blasted thing interfaces. im not "refusing" to learn more. i just havent had a chance yet. damn” 8:13:18 PM 4/12/07 “see, crash, my argument is that it's OK you are a dumbass because microsoft sold you the os with the assumption that this was what you were.” 8:16:11 PM 4/12/07 “oh, and i am glad you got a laptop. i bet you bought a dell you rat bastard!” 8:17:03 PM 4/12/07 “hp” 8:18:21 PM 4/12/07 “aside from the OS, this thing kicks ass. its got a 17" screen, dvd and cd burner, built in webcam and wireless capability, 120 gig of hard drive space, and is extremely fast” 8:23:11 PM 4/12/07 “Linux.....” 8:26:52 PM 4/12/07 “i bet you bought a dell you rat bastard Now that's funny! (we're a Dell shop)” 8:28:47 PM 4/12/07 “BTW - Im very computer literate... Windows Sucks!” 8:31:29 PM 4/12/07 “that will get you a long ways in korea... it will be like you never left 'cept all your posts will come in at strange times.” 8:35:02 PM 4/12/07 “actually, not really. ill get off work at 9pm, which is, i believe, 8am eastern. ill be getting back from 6 hours of teaching the rudiments of english, and will be starving for some more in-depth conversation. unless ive already hopped a plane in search of thai hookers” 8:50:44 PM 4/12/07 “how you say "love me long time" mr brooce willis?” 8:56:31 PM 4/12/07 “sucky sucky” 8:57:40 PM 4/12/07 “"the thread title is obviously humorous" Wasn't obvious to me. What was obvious to me was you were complaining about something because you didn't know how it worked. I wasn't throwing insults, just telling it like it is.” 9:07:14 PM 4/12/07 “Wasn't obvious to me well, youre obviously humor-impaired” 9:09:18 PM 4/12/07 “"you're obviously humor-impaired" That's very possible, in this arena I'd never argue that. Most of my career I've had to deal with numb-nuts users who wanted to blame Bill Gates, me, software developers, the full moon and everything / everybody else because they refused to learn anything new. Gets a little tiring after awhile. My all-time favorite poster is above my desk: "But we've always done it this way" Resistance to change bugs me... we have a new OS with a lot of new features, my approach is that we should learn a little about it before we complain that it's new & different!” 9:19:01 PM 4/12/07 “Whatever” 9:25:37 PM 4/12/07 “i mean, really, how do you see "monkey" and "butt" together and continue to take things seriously? its a written (look it up) law that "monkey butt" is code for "haha i make delirious laughter like cart man south park comedy channel" or something” 9:35:41 PM 4/12/07 “We will add your technological distinctiveness to our own." -- Bill the Gates [fetch-decode-execute-splat]” Tilt 4:53:47 PM 4/12/07 Ha ha ha ha!!! The Apple computer ads are starting to work on me. I love that guy! He kinda reminds me of Anthony K. (sp) of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. How come you don't hear all this worm and bug and bad news about Apple computers??” 9:36:06 PM 4/12/07 “17" screen? Damn CB, you're a backpacker! You should be trottin' around Korea with a sub-2 lb'er. Holy moly, that sounds like a nice desktop machine.” 9:44:41 PM 4/12/07 “forced upgrades keeps the machine well oiled.” 9:46:17 PM 4/12/07 “Holy moly, that sounds like a nice desktop machine thats essentially what i plan to use it as. i wanted a nice mobile desktop” 9:58:12 PM 4/12/07 “I don't know, Tango... we need to ask those black-hat hackers! Hey, I remember teletype terminals and programs stored on papertape.... and monopolies still suck. Yep! Fatware just gets fatter. We have to continually upgrade to stay in one place.... Alice in Wonderland (or was it Through the Looking-Glass? I forget).” 10:01:34 PM 4/12/07 “plus, i havent been able to explore it as much as id like, been busy getting ready for the big puddle-jump next month. some people have a natural affinity for all things techie, and they tend to forget that to alot of us, telling us to go read up on it is like saying "go read greek". computers should at least be intuitive to some degree, this one is only so-so” 10:02:32 PM 4/12/07
