We're considering doing a kayaking trip in the Adirondacks over Memorial Day weekend.

Got any wisdom to share?

Flatwater. We have a two-person touring kayak.

Ok flatwater, I can help. Some areas that come to mind (please note I don’t have a map in front of me so I’m note sure of distances) are, Long Lake to Tupper Lake along the Raquette River (there’s a 1-2 mile carry at Raquette Falls), Lows Lake, Little Tupper Lake, or the Oswegatchie River from Wanakena to High Falls. Be aware that Memorial Day weekend normally falls within the height of blackfly season, so bring plenty of bug repellent and bug nets.

With a tandem kayak, you may want to focus more on lakes where you will have more room to turn and maneuver. Add the Saranac Lakes to the list above.

That is a nice trip. We car-camped the first night on Horseshoe Lake (primitive sites) where my air mattress failed. Took the dirt road into the dam & state canoe access. Hate dams & thats a long drop. THis is also where my brother-in-law left my car door open for several days where nobody bothered my car.

Anyway, we paddled like h%$# away from the current of the dam & the bottom half of my plastic & aluminum paddle snapped off in the dams rip-rap (rock). Lucky we had a spare. You'll see a bunch of dams. Short carry across a pond. Binoculers would have been nice to find the canoe carry spot.

The Bog River flow gets interesting.Like Lows Lake despite the camps. Floating Bogs. Long carry from Lows Lake to the snake winding headwaters. Found a ground spring right there. The Rangers were sleeping under a tarp. The bugs on the Lows Lake carry were horrendsous.

We approached high falls dam at night, se we were a little nervous. Had a backpacking coloeman lamp which made camp set-up a snap.

Lots of Beaver dams that we glided over. Loons that dived & popped up 25 yards away. Made a screaming noise in the evening.

I've gone back to camp solo on Lake Lila where his wife wouldn't let him go, but he wants to do the stillwater resovoir where (at the time) there were canoe travel restrictions.
