Another local here.....There's a lot of BS in this thread and a little bit of good advise. A couple things that come to my mind: do bring a bug head net but not a mosquito net with the larger mesh. They are useless for our wonderful little "noseeums", a pesky critter that almost put a friend of mine in the hospital. Make sure you have the fine mesh style. When you think of weather, forget what you consider to be summer. It will go from spring to fall and you need to be ready for cold. On the subject of sleeping in the light, consider one of those masks you see people use on airplanes over your eyes - they work for me. Have fun, spend your money and then go home. We already have 600,000 people up here and it's getting crowded.:)

euro, you'll probably find plenty of people here who agree with you about McCandless. Its been discussed many times here over the years. I don't think he was a saint, role model, great outdoorsman, or anything else (heck, he was probably the one who ransacked the cabin/hut/or whatever it was a few miles from the bus). I just think he was living his life the way he wanted to. Things like his canoe trip down the Colorado to the Gulf of California. He wanted to do it, so he did it. He nearly died several times on that trip. Many times his adventures almost killed him, but luck always stepped in to save him. In Alaska, his luck ran out because the water in the rivers rose so that he couldn't cross them and no one came by to save his reckless ass.

I read the book. And I read it in one sitting. McCandless was a truely fascinating character. The good thing to say about him - he was an idealist, who certainly never caused any physicall hurt or harm to anybody else than his own person. He never got others into trouble. He lived his life the way he wanted to.
And yet...I can't help but also seeing a very selfish, spoiled little brat. A most charming one, I admit :-)

very selfish, spoiled little brat

I see those all the time, except they are out drinking with their friends, or playing golf all day while their wives take care of the kids
