Recs?
I want a lighweight boot. Don't need GTX but need more ankle support than is provided by trail runners.

I was seriously considering these:

Anyone experienced these or something similar?

Thanks!

I've no experience with their high tops, but the Montrail low cuts I used on my thru hike served me well. "Looks" like a good boot.

Backpacker rag rated them one of the best.

Lowa Boots ROCK! most pairs average 2 lbs and they fit like a glove.

I am surprised to see that Lowa boots seem to be pretty popular in the US? I thought their rather traditional design wouldn't make them look somewhat 'oldfashioned'? What about Meindl boots? I had Lowa and Meindl and have been wearing them in really wet conditions, when it was raining all day long, through ankle deep mud and bog, and they always kept my feet dry and warm.

I use something simular. They're great, although still warmer than running shoes.

Keen Targhees are also some great low hikers, and really waterproof with their "EVent" membrane.....

Euro Hike-

I have a pair of Lowa's and absolutely love them. They have a glove leather lining and have never given me a blister. I am not saying that I might not want to change to something lighter in the future, but I have been very happy with them. I have 500 miles on them and they look almost new.

Meindl boots are only sold in the US under the Cabelas name. You can see their selection at cabelas.com.

It is getting harder and harder to find finely crafted European footwear in the states these days. It seem like everything is made in China.

Not to disparage, but I hiked with a Brit in South America and his Mendels gave him nothing but grief. He had them resolved by the company before the trip and the sole came unglued 50 miles from anywhere in the back country. He limped it out and we got it sewn on in a marketplace, but it leaked for the next 6 mos. He was pissed.

I may go for the Asolo 95s if they fit me well. Not too much heavier than this hightops, waterproof and have a poly midsole. I'm just afraid that the EVA mid will compact in too short a time. However, I'm still debating. I'll see if my local REI carries them.

I'm thinking of boots, particularly Lowa's or some other (Meindl?) top notch boots. I've tried others but not the cadillac brands.

mmmm...cadillac brands...?
If you go for Lowa or Meindl it would rather be the Mercedes and BMW brand.
The italians have a reputation for very fine, very elegant and posh footwear, but I gues just like their Ferrari or Lamboghinis you wouldn't take them off-road?
How about the Brits? They are making Landrover. Maybe they have good outdoor boots then?

I wore these for the Long Trail (Montrail Comps):

I had great luck with these - they have a GTX membrane which meant diddly squat in downpours, but still a great boot, imo.

I just bought a pair of the Biomex Lowas. I put 50 miles on them the first weekend on the BFT. Mud, snow, etc. Awesome boots.
