“hummm - some good news - the blowdowns on Conley Cove Trail will be cleared since they are using that trail as a fire break”

“Hiking the Florida Trail after the fires of '98 was a challenge since all of the markers disappeared. I wonder what that will be like in Linville.”

“It's still burning. They thought they'd have it finished this weekend but nope, the fire changed directions again. The officials said they'd definitely have it under control this week though! Yeah, right. As a result, the Linville gorge area is still closed. Someday I'll get to see it.”

“Linville Gorge Wilderness Area reopens
The popular Linville Gorge Wilderness Area will be partially open for tourists over the upcoming July 4 holiday. Forest Service officials issued a statement on June 18 indicating the fires that were burning in the Pisgah National Forest are now mostly contained.
All of the Linville Wilderness west of the Linville River is now re-opened to the public. On the eastern side, everything from the Blue Ridge Parkway south to Spence Ridge Trail is also open, as well as the Table Rock picnic area.
Fire crews are continuing mop-up procedures at Shortoff Mountain site. Therefore areas south of the Spence Ridge Trail from the Linville River east to the park’s boundary will remained closed until further notice.

A wildfire has grown to about 4,500 acres since last week, when the fire had scorched more than 2,700 acres in Pisgah National Forest, officials said Sunday.

Some 4,517 acres now have burned in the Shortoff Mountain fire in the Linville Gorge Wilderness, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The fire and two others in the same forest were started June 8 by lightning. The fires have burned a total of 5,400 acres and are about 95 percent contained, the service said. -- Associated Press”
