“Lucy, I've been to Isle Royale 3x (so far). It's one of my favorite places. Don't forget your sharpie marker for shelter art and look carefully, you'll find many names from this place on the walls.

And yes, HOI is right, you do have to filter water and also hang food (the squirrels, camp foxes and mice will eat right through your pack if you don't), and all the normal backpacking type precautions.

Oh, and FYI, if anyplace will give you killer blisters Isle Royale will. Make sure you have loads of thick moleskin and shoes or boots that fit real nice before you go.”

“Bravo to all of you that are able to 'solo'. I tried it once and I can not do it again. You see I am afraid of spiders, bears, anything that is active after dark cuz you see I am afraid of the dark. 'And you backpack?' is the question I get all the time. Thankfully, I do not lack hiking partners and actually have to decline trips due to lack of vacation, must spend time with the family, etc.

When it is just myself and my hiking partner, another woman, we get the same comments that you have received. Don't let anothers fears stop you from living life. As one famous mountaineer says and I live by, I do not want to discover when I've grown old that I lived my life growing old. Do not just be alive but live your life!

If you can solo then more power to you. Most bad people are not going to hike into the wilderness to find someone to harm; there are plenty of victims within easy reach.”

Fox River Valley Girls are the greatest. Some of them I definitely miss.

Yes, I do know where the Fox River Valley is located, as well as the surrounding area and much more. I spent most of four years there. That is a great area in which to live. You are very lucky.

Three years ago this month I looked down at the Fos River from my room high above the River. The room was on the top floor of a new building in Appleton on the campus. It was class reunion time. I walked across the Fox on a bridge during many of those cold, wind-biting days.

“I see lots of solo ladies on the trail. I (right or wrong) keep my distance from them as I do not want them to feel threatened in any manner. I'm a avid hiker who is a (off-duty) 24/7 peace officer. Most hikersa have approached me first, to open up a onversation or request assistance (usually mapping /location) which is OK by me.

The vast majority of hikers deep in the woods are truely good people. Close to the parking lots or smaller parks occasionally possess the rowdier types.”

I didn't read this whole thread, but I'm sure many have spoken up and said that the ones telling you about the scary things are scared of those things themselves.

At one place I worked, the secretary would print out pictures of "suspected AT killers" and give them to me just before I'd go off alone. I got so I'd just say thanks - she was more of a drama queen than anything, and quit after she didn't get more of a reaction than that.

“Yea, sure! Most folks would have said, "Upper" or "Lower" Fox River Valley and associated it further with the name of a town/city or the nearest such place. There are many towns in or near the Valley. Or, alternatively, they could have identified with the upper or lower Fox River.

Is the Upper Fox River north or south of Appleton?”
