Howdy!

I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for a hand held GPS which you can use in the car as well. Something which can give roadside recomendations (hotels restaraunts etc etc), as well as trip routes. Obviously it wouldn't have a "voice" which car specific devices have.

I'd want one for trekking anyways, but am doing a crosscountry drive. After the crosscountry drive I'd have little need for an in car unit.

Thanks!

garmin, magellan, both will have those features, you would want to get the legend or better in the garmin brand, not sure which model in the explorist models has the map and pre loaded points of interest.

I have a Garmin csx. I use it for hiking & LOVE it for the car. A little pricey. You still have to buy the TOPO software AND City Navigator.

I have a dash mount for it & 12vdc cord. Used it yesterday in the Adirondacks & again today.

There is some difficulty using BOTH street maps & topo's but it has removable memory chips. (micro SD, about the size of your pinky finger nail)

I just pop 1 chip in for topo's & switch chips for the car.

LOVE IT.

Look at the Delorme PN20. It has all the features you could want in a vehicle or hand held unit. Get the deluxe package if you can afford it.

Hey folks, thanks a lot for the replies.

Looks like the Garmin is the way to go for me, as they seem more available in my area.

Which CSx do you have or recommend catskhiker? Seems that there are 2 available (60CSx & 76 CSx).

Also the Garmins do not use special rechargeable batteries as far as I can figure right?

Thanks!
