Hard Hat Riots

“I saw on another forum that 37 years ago today, the Hard Hat Riots occurred. A bunch of commie hippy traitors were setting up viet cong flags and defiling American flags. A bunch of blue-collar workers, joined by white-collar workers from Wall Street meted out justice in the form of a severe beat-down on the hippies.

Funny stuff. Today, I can picture violin and tilt in on the streets of NY mouthing off their usual american hating b.s. and getting beat down by real Americans. Hilarious!

This ought to be a Federal holiday!”

Liberals often think that freedom of speech includes freedom from consequences. Do I agree with the illegal activities of the Hard Hats? No. However, the hippies were stupid enough to be publicly treasonous, and that was bound to piss a lot of Americans off. It's simply not suprising that events unfolded the way they did. And it tickled me no end that they got what they deserved.

Similarly, if Fred Phelps and Clan were to get the beatdown during one of their protests at a veteran's funeral, I would laugh my ass off. I wouldn't agree with it, but man that would be satisfying.

As for this issue, I figured you and that other goofball would pipe up and take a shot at me. I truly was standing right near the statue by Federal Hall. It was a peaceful demonstration. The cops were being good. There really were no treasonous acts, unless you want to consider the commie flag treasonous (I did not witness that. Perhaps an overblown isolated act??)

The real aberration was the pre-meditated destruction and violence of those "Real Americans." Very macho to overpower a bunch of kids with deadly weapons. This was unprovoked, BTW.

I'm not going to go on with this. I thought that just maybe (I must have been out of my head giving you this much credit) you would actually have appreciated the fact that someone on the board was there and could offer a little first-hand account of that day in history. You thought it important enough to mention, but obviously not interested in anything more than an excuse for cheap shots. Thanks for reinforcing the reason I quit the poignant debate around here!

I used "Real Americans" as a conversational convenience. What I meant was Americans who have a sense of patriotism who take great umbrage at disrespect of country. I honestly don't think that war protestors are inherently anti-American. However, people like violin and tilt who continually prove themselves to be against what America stands for...that's another story. And even though I'm not a hugely patriotic person I do love the freedoms here and I do appreciate the realities behind American success, so their efforts to bring America down does make me wish for their smackdown. They have no sense of self-respect, and a childish view of the world. Being loudmouth idiots on top of that is naturally going to invite consequences.

For the record, Mutt, you are one of the people I've had some of my favorite sessions with. At least, there used to be substance to what you said, unlike the yo-yo's that spend their time trying to twist something the opposition says, use it against them, and then say "case closed." You seem to have made a bit of a departurre from that, from the limited reading I've done on here recently.
