Gforce, I am heading to Monson next Friday 21rst, unless you take alot of zero days you'll be finished by then. I think Fridge is coming with(not sure) and Twigeater and the Twigletts are meeting me or us in Katahdin Stream CG on Saturday the 28th after I/we go up Katahdin.

gforce - there are still some climbs in store. The first couple of days out of Monson are (or at least used to be) pretty strenuous. But nothing like the Whites.

Crossing the Kennebec on foot was fun -- a bit scary, since the water was strong and fast, but since it was a hot day, I wasn't that worried about taking a swim. I made it safely across, though my pack went in the canoe, which made it a bit easier. As it turns out, there are much harder fords on the PCT and CDT.

are they as wide as the kennebec?? it's is pretty wide. the problem with the kennebec is, theres that damn dam upstream, raising the water levels unpredictably. when it lets go, you dont have a chance

crossing the Kennebec
About a half mile upriver there's a pretty decent bend, which makes for a wide part. Nothing much to it really, only one part about midway got ball deep. Me, Pigpen, and Squeeky G skinned down to our bare boots and packs and made the cross just fine. Got to the other side, donned our dry socks, clothes, and wide smiles and went our merry way. Thru the ball deep section we set up for each other in case we had to throw our packs if'n we lost our footing. I shore don't recall anything about a dam tho, the river did seem running pretty strong actually. We were purists tho, saw the canoe on the other side (wasn't there a rope too?), and bedamned that modern luxury!!!!

gforce,

Just noticed that there's been 2031 hits on this thread, and that's about the length of the AT. Looking forward to hearing about your hike when you get back.

from the maine ATC website
I'll be backpacking Maine's AT this year. Is it safe to wade across the Kennebec River?

No. The Kennebec River is the most formidable unbridged crossing along the entire 2,174-mile Appalachian Trail. The Kennebec is approximately 70 yards wide with a swift, powerful current under the best of circumstances. However, as a result of releases of water from hydro facilities upstream, the depth and current of the river surge quickly and unpredictably. You cannot cross faster than the water level rises.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FORD THE RIVER.
PLEASE USE THE FERRY SERVICE.

My guess is at one time he did allow hikers to wade across while he ferried the packs, but not anymore. In speaking with Steve the one thing he kept talking about was the liability issues in what he does. (Steve has others that do the ferry across now.) I think this could be a big part of the reason he is gettting out of the business. He went so far as to say that he has refused to ferry hikers across a couple of times because of the conditions. He told the hikers he was 99% sure he could get them across safely, but the 1% chance he could not was not worth the risk . . . so they had to wait.

Monson, ME
Well, I'm taking a zero here today at Shaw's before the final leg of the journey. You can't believe how incredibly beautiful it is here in town today. I hope that it stays this way for the rest of the year. All the NOBO's are pretty excited with the end in sight . . . in fact there were even a few tears shed when a group headed out into the 100 mile Wilderness today.

Ginny, I'm sure you are right about 2-3 of those days looking pretty strenuous and especially carrying a pack full of food.

Here's to hoping you have an amazing summit day full of blue sky, gforce! Enjoy the last stretch of your hike. :)

p.s. You'd do well at avoiding White House Landing. From what I hear, the guy that owns the place isn't very pleasent (to guests or his family). And if you go, make sure you only blow the air horn once. ;)

We ate breakfast and went to the Post Office. I mailed 2 Moose to my neices daughters for their birthdays. We didn't get on the trail till about 9 am. Butch Cassidy dropped us off and will pick us up at the other end.
The trail climbed up the hill and soon Speaks Little came by us. We continued on and soon we were at Pleasant Pond Lean-to. We had told Butch Cassidy that we would be at the road at 3pm and we were there at 2:58pm. I had a Gatorade and a coke and we headed into Monson.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid will finish up on the 24th at Katadhin.
We wish them both good luck and watch those knees.
We got back yesterday evening and had a scrumptous supper with chicken pie, corn on the cob, green peas, mashed potatoes, cranberry, squash and apple pie for desert. Shaw's is a fantastic place.
Tony the Tiger is here as well as G-Force, Backfire, Jake Leg, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
We have now gone 2034.6 miles and we have 139.4 to go.
