yosemite, camp 4
So i'm planning a trip to Yosemite in june to hike half dome. I didn't get reservations in time, so after a little bit of research i think camp 4 is the closest first-come first-serve site to the Halfdome/Happy Isles trailhead.

my questions are: 1-is this the closest first-come first-serve site i can get to my desired trailhead?

2- also and more importantly, if camp 4 is the way to go, what are my chances of getting a spot in the second week of june? i plan to leave thursday or friday around midnight, in hopes to arrive at camp 4 the next morning (friday or saturday) at around 6 am.

I figured that that worst-cased scenario, if there's no availability at camp 4, i could always purchase a wilderness pass and set my tent up, is this possible? where could i park?

also on a side note, could anyone point me in the direction of a good map of yosemite including campsites and the valley. im trying to find out where the first-come first-serve campsites are in relation to the half dome/happy trails trailhead. so far all the maps i've found on the net are too small or don't have my desired features.

thank you for any information or insight you can give.

sshagy,
The North Pines campground has walk-in sites. First come, first serve. Better then Camp 4 and much closer to Happy Isles and the trail up to Half Dome.

Availability? Well, Sierrapaloosers from this site were able to acquire enough sites for about 15 people on a July Weekend. Get there early enough and you should be fine. Most campers in Yosemite don't like to be more than a few feet from their vehicle.

sshagy - Are you day hiking Half Dome from the valley floor? Or backpacking to someplace like Little Yosemite Valley and going to Half Dome from there?

sshagy - It is a butt kicker. Start very early.

I am not sure when they put the cables up. You really should check that out or you can't make it to the top.

Here's from their website:

All park trails are open, except:

* The Half Dome cables are down for the season. They would normally be installed by around May 18, conditions permitting. This information will be updated once the cables are up.

Here's my website. Did Half Dome 3 times...The Backcountry: Half Dome
