Nice pics. The neighborhood looks very clean. It's quite a contrast to the views my daughter has sent me from Xi'an, China.

Bangkok has a distict aroma as well. Being only a few feet above sea level it can get ugly.

yesterday was my first day flying solo. i came in from 1-3 to prepare, after spending most of the morn preparing and fretting. taught from 3-7, observed from 7-8, and from 8-9, just sorta chillaxed, reflected, reviewed and gathered my thoughts for today.

my first few days teaching were a total disaster. kept forgetting how to do things, what order to do them in, how to keep a good pace, etc. i spent a lot of time regretting taking the job, wondering "what the hell was i thinking?"

of course, i know what i was thinking, i was thinking of adventure and travel and excitement in a far away exotic land. well, gwangju is far away but its hardly exotic. its almost a backwater town (if a town of a million and a half can be a backwater town), its smelly, and theres not much going on in the city other than scores of restaurants and shops all stacked up rudely next to each other. i cant wait to get out of town tomorrow and do a little hiking on mudeung mountain.

yesterday i did ok (not great, not even good), and i didnt have to do the tougher classes i thought i was going to. its not so much that the teaching techniques are any more complicated, but the sheer volume of material that is supposed to be covered in a short amount of time. its maddening. so today is the best ive felt about this job in a long time, and the first in awhile i havent contemplated jumping on the first plane out of incheon. well, now the immigration dept has my passport while they are processing my alien registration card, so i guess thats out of the question

there were so many times that i just wanted to just quit, but i really couldnt without a really compelling reason, because of all the commitment and support ive gotten. i dont want to let my friends and family down after all the support theyve given me, i dont want to let jason and jung-wa down, after all the trouble they went through to bring me out here, plus i would have to pay for my own plane ticket back, and by the terms of the contract, owe them for the ticket they bought to bring me over here, and then i would be flat broke.

so anyways, im glad that i couldnt quit. im really struggling, but i think its gonna be ok and im going to enjoy my year over here

Hang in there Crash!!! Any new job is hard for the first 60 - 90 days. It doesn't matter where you are. I'm sure being in a foreign country isn't helping. Give yourself some credit for what you are doing.

Crash, I have no doubts you're going to do great. It does take a little time. Figure new job adjustment, cultural adjustment, big, big move, etc., etc. You've got a lot going on there. Just give it more time. :)
