Jimmy san - I'd think twice about that stoning!
The Sloth Bear does not move as slowly as a sloth, and can easily outrun a human. One theory has it that early explorers saw these bears lying upside down in trees and gave them their common name for the similarity to the way a sloth hangs in trees. Another claims that the Sloth Bear gets its name because its normal walk is more of a meandering shuffle.

I figured that he might be thinking about the Sloth. This is the first time I've heard of the sloth bear! Once I watched one cross a street in the Canal Zone. It was slow, especially so when it reached the curb. But it made it, up and over, and continued on it's journey.

lmao! i did NOT know this... i didn't think about it now that i do it makes sense that a "sloth bear" isn't necessarily a sloth. very interesting. thanks ns!

I don't think you should post any hoe house photos here, Crashie.

So what date can I make the WELCOME HOME CRASH BANG hike? In keeping with tradition it should be in the gorge, but if you have a special request, lets hear it.

Come to think of it I was looking at a map of Clifty the other day and saw a cool loop trail just north of red river and near RRG boundary. Do you know the trail?
meangreen

8/25/07

i know the loop of which you speak, but i have not explored it, except the portion that is the sheltowee, and a short portion of the side trail
crash bang

I thought it may be fun to find a trail less traveled. You know, something good and remote. I think I may need to keep looking, but Clifty is a better starting point then RRG don't you think? Ooh, what about Michigan? Isle Royale? Something similar? Lets find one Realy seldom used.
meangreen

isle royale would be awesome, depending on conditions. i think they get blackflies in spring, though. june might not be a good time. summer might be better. minong trail would be awesome. its the most remote trail on the island, good opportunity to see lots of mooses and meeses

wolvsees too! That would kick azz. How long are we talking here? 4/5 days?
meangreen
8:25:53 AM
8/25/07

probably, yea. dont get your hopes up about the wolves, there are only a handful on the entire island. the moose, however, are as plentiful as the deer in indianner. i saw 7 or 8 in my 5 day jaunt with cmb a few years ago
crash bang
8:33:47 AM

the cool thing about em, theyre not as easily spooked as deer, so you can watch them for a really long time if you dont startle em

http://www.isle.royale.national-park.com/camping.htm#bugs

so, isle royale is something for late summer. i like it because its beautiful and remote (the least visited national park in the country), but you dont have to worry about bears
crash bang
8:37:12 AM
8/25/07

cool!

Seroiusly, tho. lets go someplace that hasn't seen another human in weeks. Way remote. Does that still exist in the lower 48?
meangreen
8:42:35 AM
8/25/07

dunno. lots of places out west that you feel like youre the only one for miles and miles. idaho, wyoming, montana, parts of colorado maybe. not a real expert on out west
crash bang
8:46:16 AM
8/25/07

theres this
http://www.thebackpacker.com/trips/trip/1281.php

i dont know that it has the the degree of remoteness youre looking for, seeing as how its in a national recreation area, but its in the mountains and in a state that has grizzly bears
crash bang
8:48:35 AM
8/25/07

Me neither. Never been there. Don't know if I'll have the funds for two western trips in the same summer though. Buying new gear for your CO trip is gonna have funds kinda on the slim side for me. I'm gonna have to buy boots, bag, hardshell jacket, helmet, plane tickets. Yup, that's gonna eat up my extra cash for a while. I better stick with something within a days drive of indy for this one, though I guess that really limits how remote we will get. Any other suggestions, not the IR is bad, just looking for options.

DUDES! Grass grows on the trails on the western side of the island. We saw one other hiker the entire Minong Ridge trail (which is a good ass kicker). AND do not EVER go there in June. EVER. You will suffer torture of the worst sort. Vicious little blood thirsty black flies will literally rip your flesh from your body! And the moose population changes regularly. One year you may be tripping over them, the next all dead and you'll be lucky to see one. But, moose or no moose, it's still one of the most lovely places on earth, imo.

And Crash Bang, my kitchen is sorta back in working order. Send me your address please.

Thanks for the info Sass. Is it actually illegal to go there in the winter or just difficult to get there?
meangreen
11:22:54 AM
8/25/07

You can't get there. I don't believe it's illegal though. Once you did get there, if you could, you wouldn't be able to get around. The island gets so much snow that there was still six feet or so on the North side in Late June (when the black flies will eat you alive). In winter even the moose and wolves stick to the edges of the island. I think even the scientists that run the wolf/moose study stay away, except for doing fly overs and landing on the ice to check out moose kills etc.

Well you know MI pretty well Sass, where is a good place to BP in winter up there?
meangreen

the ferry and floatplanes only run to the island about 6 months out of the year. other than that, youd have to get yourself there, but you really woulndt want to

Hey crash- heard about the major flooding in N korea that left over 80,000 people homeless- did you see any refugees in your area? I don't know if N & S Korea are on decent terms when a disaster occurs.

i'll second the italian wine thing. the etruscans invented wine making... imho french wines don't hold a candle to them. if you go visit frascati and l'aquila. have a gelato in the town square. swing by paganica (a small town of 7000 people) and have a pizza at "i quattro specchi"... :) bring me back a bottle of amarro grand sasso!
