“Nope your lost,,,,,,,, The trails have changed in that area, remember county line trail was much longer in length than it is now and North South trail has changed as well............I have a current map and actually have all the Blow downs listed as well as of May 2007...........I have been there 4 times this year ............and planning on several more........”

“I see a couple of WV trips but with the price of gas and a long drive from Tenn. it isn't feasible for a weekend trip.

Of course, the roads are completely falling apart because the state DOT is broke, but hey -- at least the gas is cheap. :D”

“Full service = they won't let you pump your own and they are perfectly willing to spill gas on your tank if you are riding a motorcycle.”

That was a pet peeve of mine when I encountered that on the road.

I had no problem with urban riding when I did ride............though I don't recommend it to others.
If I do pick up the habit again I'll have no reason to ride in Jersey.”

“Windigrrl/ the mileage is less than 1/2 mile friday from the Trail head...........Saturday approx 6 to 7 miles...........Sunday 2 to 3 miles. You gotta be there.........”

Hey, I'm still new to backpacking and I'm trying to be responsible. I don't want to sign up for a trip and then not be able to do it. I don't want to be the one that has to have my stuff carried for me because I bit off more than I can chew. I know my limits and they are around 10 miles a day. I try to stay within, or close those when I'm hiking with others, especially when I'm not very close to home. I'll push myself when I know I can have a plan B ready if I need it.

“My comfortable limits are about the same as yours windigrrl. I did 15m one day just to see if I could do it and I was forced to do 15m through snow another day when a friend got lost in Yellowstone for 3 days by himself. My max mileage is 8-10 on any trip I plan. We're keeping the first day light as we've got people coming from Jersey, Indiana, after work, etc. If you get there early setup camp and dayhike!”

“The trail we will be taking will follow the Middle Fork of the Williams river. We will ford this river 2 times so bring some crocks, sandles etc,..... the water temps in the Cranberry even during the middle of summer is very cold typical mountain cold river water.............There will be some deep pools for some skinny dippin if needed.
This is a bear sanctuary so keep in mind how you will cache your food.
The drinking water supply will be everywhere, so no problem getting water.
The Wilderness here can turn for the worse so bring warm clothing for the night and rain gear is essential. I will bring a big nylon Tarp if we get rain for the camp.

and I will send you a map of the trails and highlight exactly where we will be camped friday and saturday night.

“windigrll, The temps at night will be high 40's to 50 at night. If it rains it will be much cooler. I will be taking a 35 degree bag and my wife will be taking her 15 degree Big Agnes. Of course you could sleep with...................................................MY 2 dogs. Just kidding.................I would go warm if I were you. If you need to borrow a Sleeping bag I have 10 or more in my arsenal with most from 0 to 35 degrees. They are clean .

That said, is there a reason to be concerned? I've never heard of Cranberry as having known problems with bears breaking into bear bags overnight -- at least not like Shenandoah, the NJ Appalachian Trail, or Adirondack High Peaks, anyway...”

“Cranberry Glades is not Traveled much like the Shenandoah or the AT Trail sections . This is only a Bear sanctuary. I use a bear bag and hang my food stuff, I have had a bear incounter here inthe Cranberry I will show you the Scare on my legg, just remind me.............That said, I am ging to have another Margarita........

Windigrrl we will have so much activity and 2 dogs I don't think or plan on seeing a bear. We will se sign of bear, I can almost guarantee that. I will show you this as well.”

“yea dub I will sht my britches iffin it stands up and winds you. Then drops down anly to advance due to the fact you have a big fat candy bar stuffed in you top pack. Then you suddenly yell out to try and scare the bear away and the big ole critter just keeps strolling your way dropping it's nose down low then stopping only to stand up and size you up..........then all of a sudden I look around and your dropping poop out your britches and pp down your leg and then in a momentent notice the Bear runs away...........”

“seriously though Were we are camping the second night near Hell's for certain branch , you take the branch and follow up the Mt ,it forks go left and follow this fork until it forks again to the left. Go here and follow the branch headwaters and there you will find a BIG bear den. Also at the first fork in the Branch take the right branch and there are some cliffs there with some dens as well. hehehe......... we will see bear sign in this area, Lots of ole Apple trees and Persimmon trees and lots of candy bars too.

“Oh, chill out people. The bears are no big deal. I live in New Jersey; we share our backyards with them (because we can't hunt them, but that's another political (read: fuego) story to be dealt with in another time and place) all the time.

We've got a good number of people going on this trip. If we stay together as a group, the bears won't come anywhere near us.”
