Trail info requested on the New River Gorge Area “Hey all!! Has anyone hiked the New River Gorge in Wva??? I am thinking of a rafting/hiking combo and have an outfitter who is willing to work with me on planning such a trip. The Kaymoor to Cunard Trail looks good to me, but all I have to go on is my topo software. If anyone has any info on trails and thier conditions, I would really appreciate the help. See ya later, Randall” 3:39:20 PM 5/23/07 “I have not hiked in it with the exception of a day hike to Nuttalville, but there are plenty of trails throughout the park and they do allow primitive camping. This is the page about hiking from the park's website. Contact them for more information: http://www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/hiking.htm” 4:28:52 PM 5/23/07 “go to Cranberry” 8:26:14 PM 5/23/07 “Hey all. Thanks for the info and links. See ya later. Randall” 8:54:26 PM 5/23/07 “http://www.midatlantichikes.com has some info but as I recall he stayed on top. He mentions a trail with many steps at Kaymoor that sounds intriguing but probably not a good portage. ;) There is also a National Geographic Trails Illustrated map that helped on my brief visit there last year, but again I stayed on top.” 6:49:56 AM 5/24/07 KiOeh “KiOeh, Thank s for the link, it has proved very helpful!!! See ya later. Randall” 8:34:07 AM 5/24/07 Hey Randall “I had replied to your forum post on Hiking Upward.com. The Kaymoor Loop on my site is about the biggest loop in the NRNP and backpacking or camping isn't allowed there. There is one spot I'm looking into that would be a linear hike but I don't know if you can camp there although they have primitive car camping not far from it. The road that provided access to the camping area and lower trailhead was blown out about 3 years ago (Isabel?). There is still acess from the upper trailhead. It's Called Glade Creek ... a real pretty trout stream I'm told. There are some side trails off of it but no loops. If I go back there on vacation one day I might try to fashion a loop but about 1/2 mile will be a steep downhill bushwhack. I might get in over my head on that one. As I suggested in the HU post and mentioned here by others the closest good BPing venue to the New is the Cranberry Wilderness and the Cranberry Backcountry. (Two different places with 2 different sets of rules.) last edited: 5/24/07 11:14:33 AM” 11:11:09 AM 5/24/07 Mrhyker!!! “Mrhyker!!! Thanks for the data and I am not sure about the hiking upward post (Not a member)Guess there is more than one Randall, lol See ya later. Randall” 5:39:16 PM 5/24/07 Sorry 'bout that! “It was a different screen name but the question was spot on identical!” 9:58:40 AM 5/25/07
