Cutting down treesView Messages“this is so sad. just keep in mind that the island is only 16 miles long. and they want to quarantine 7.8-square-mile and cut down 7,900 trees ...... Chain-saws will target tree killers Wednesday, May 23, 2007 By GLENN NYBACK STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Federal and state pruners will cut down and chip 7,900 trees and chemically treat another 6,400 on the West Shore beginning next week, in an effort to prevent the spread of the tree-killing Asian longhorned beetle to other areas of Staten Island. In addition, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the state Department of Agriculture and Markets has implemented a 7.8-square-mile quarantine area on the North and West shores where inspectors will begin to survey trees in private and public areas to see if the pesky bug has winged its way elsewhere. http://www.silive.com/news/advance/index.ssf?/base/news/117992166994210.xml&coll=1” 6:44:29 AM 5/25/07 “Just another day's supply of toilet paper!” 7:06:57 AM 5/25/07 “where they want to cut down most of the trees, the area is near the water. if they cut them all done, what will stop and soak up the water?” 7:08:49 AM 5/25/07 “Paper towels?” 7:18:56 AM 5/25/07 “LOL..the most beautiful thing about a tree is what you can make from it....” 7:23:42 AM 5/25/07 “im glad to be able to give you two some morning laughs” 7:27:48 AM 5/25/07 “Internalising Limbaugh's philosophy makes people pretty much worthless when it comes to preserving ecosystems. Unfortunately, cutting down trees appears to be necessary to stop the spread of disease and introduced species.” 7:38:54 AM 5/25/07 “Asian longhorned beetle are nasty little buggers. I know that when I went to a campground I was told not to bring outside firewood.” 7:46:07 AM 5/25/07 “Mapleleaf don't bring firewood anywhere outside your area, ever. Someone posted a thread about this yesterday w/ a link from the forrest service. If it's not the Asian Longhorn it's the emerald ash borer, or some other destructive bug. And plant variety instead of maples and oaks, maples and oaks. I can relate to how you feel. We lost about 30% of our trees in the city in the last five years. It's been a blessing as free firewood is everywhere, but it's sad to see them all come down. On a brighter note, the City Arborist is planting some really cool, different varieties of trees. On a not-so-cool note, we now have to (or are supposed to) get a permit to plant a tree (I imagine it costs about $10), and get the specie approved by him. He doesn't want to lose such a huge chunk of trees again I guess.” 7:53:20 AM 5/25/07 “i have not heard about anyone planting trees. but i will keep an ear open” 7:56:38 AM 5/25/07 “I hope that they have some replacements planned for the area.” 7:59:14 AM 5/25/07 “Thousands of acres atop Clingmans dome were devastated by the same bug. also the existing root structure should prevent erosion until replacement trees can make up for the loss. It is terrible but may be the lesser of two evils. 8:20:44 AM 5/25/07 “Hey tilty, remember the enviornmental summit during the 42nd administration the table was made from a rare south american tree or something...(LOL). So I would say your chief Enviro wacko agrees with Me.” 8:26:38 AM 5/25/07 “Or was that the Wooley Adelgid? I can't keep up with all the bugs.... balsam wooly adelgid (Adelges piceae ratz.)? hemlock wooly adelgid (Adelges tsugae)?” 8:34:41 AM 5/25/07 “The deforestation on Clingman's dome was caused by the Wooly Adelgid.” 8:37:29 AM 5/25/07 “I stand corrected : )” 9:38:10 AM 5/25/07 “yes, now please sit down! :)” 9:59:36 AM 5/25/07 “Quiet in the back of the class! lol” 10:10:29 AM 5/25/07 “Flashbacks Uh.. thank you Harry um.. anyone else want to try. : )” 11:29:55 AM 5/25/07 “class class....SHUT UP sister mary margret” 12:14:27 PM 5/25/07 “Bueler...Bueler...Bueler” 12:42:29 PM 5/25/07 “I actually bought some small chestnut trees, offspring of local blight resistant chestnut trees that are very prolific, big and healthy. I hope they thrive. Since it will be a while before we can tackle reshaping the back slope (the dropoff??!!! Nemo reference)they are going in to large planter pots.” 12:44:37 PM 5/25/07 “Mobile Forest” 3:56:29 PM 5/25/07 “LOL..the most beautiful thing about a tree is what you can make from it....” XL400236 5:23:42 AM 5/25/07 Why don't I see any trip reports from you from the Rooms to Go store then??” 7:35:45 PM 5/25/07 “Any kind of tree is good down here. During a drought a few years back, a horseman passed us on a Ruidoso trail mumbling something about cutting down the trees since they absorbed too much water. To that I replied I had some scrub desert to sell. As to insect infestations in more forested areas, sometimes its a hard choice when it comes to invasive species. I didn't know there was restrictions on firewood though - makes sense when you think about it.” 8:12:40 AM 5/29/07 “Maple, you stop cuttin' down on Tree! You might hurt his feelings! In the '80s we lived in a house that had three big sassafras trees in the back yard.” 8:59:58 AM 5/29/07 “I can just see Marko out in the backyard in the dead of night making illegal root beer --- You sure that wasn't during Prohibition?” 9:10:36 AM 5/29/07 “Hell, I would have made guitar bodies out of the wood if I had been into it in them days.............or maybe a table or chair. Sassafras is perty! ![]() ![]() last edited: 5/29/07 9:32:19 AM” 9:27:03 AM 5/29/07 “yes she is and a good gardener, too.” 9:31:59 AM 5/29/07 “Yes indeed, and lighter and softer than red oak.” 9:32:58 AM 5/29/07 “So is Maple.” 10:39:01 AM 5/29/07 “Nothing like running your hands over a prepared piece of maple or sassafras.” 10:43:54 AM 5/29/07 “Watch out for splinters ---” 10:44:23 AM 5/29/07 “Hay Maple didn't you use to work at a SAWMILL?” 10:48:14 AM 5/29/07 ““Watch out for splinters ---” Tilt 11:44:23 AM 5/29/07 Or a slap across the face...” 10:57:11 AM 5/29/07 “Will that be quarter-sawn or flat-sawn?” 11:10:30 AM 5/29/07 “Might get kerfed about the head and shoulders.” 11:32:01 AM 5/29/07 “measure twice....” 11:41:02 AM 5/29/07 “It all sounds well and good, but I just hate it when the teeth start cutting into my wood.” 11:47:46 AM 5/29/07 “(G)NAW! You didn't say that!” 11:51:12 AM 5/29/07 “you guys are freaks.. not sure what you are talking about BS” 6:09:28 AM 5/30/07 “....and Dorks.” 6:40:26 AM 5/30/07 “Just because we like to have our wood handcrafted into something fabulous doesn't mean you should call us names.” 6:43:50 AM 5/30/07 “sass he has a good point last edited: 5/30/07 6:46:38 AM” 6:46:27 AM 5/30/07 “How do you know he has a good point, Mapleleaf?” 7:01:04 AM 5/30/07 “MAPLELEAF SAW HYWAY'S POINT!!! last edited: 5/30/07 7:13:36 AM” 7:12:39 AM 5/30/07 “Not only that, but she gets it.” 7:19:21 AM 5/30/07 “groan. to early” 7:21:37 AM 5/30/07 “what, you need more foreplay?” 7:27:54 AM 5/30/07 “lmao” 7:32:49 AM 5/30/07
