STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Federal and state pruners will cut down and chip 7,900 trees and chemically treat another 6,400 on the West Shore beginning next week, in an effort to prevent the spread of the tree-killing Asian longhorned beetle to other areas of Staten Island.

In addition, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the state Department of Agriculture and Markets has implemented a 7.8-square-mile quarantine area on the North and West shores where inspectors will begin to survey trees in private and public areas to see if the pesky bug has winged its way elsewhere.

“Mapleleaf don't bring firewood anywhere outside your area, ever. Someone posted a thread about this yesterday w/ a link from the forrest service. If it's not the Asian Longhorn it's the emerald ash borer, or some other destructive bug. And plant variety instead of maples and oaks, maples and oaks.
I can relate to how you feel. We lost about 30% of our trees in the city in the last five years. It's been a blessing as free firewood is everywhere, but it's sad to see them all come down. On a brighter note, the City Arborist is planting some really cool, different varieties of trees. On a not-so-cool note, we now have to (or are supposed to) get a permit to plant a tree (I imagine it costs about $10), and get the specie approved by him. He doesn't want to lose such a huge chunk of trees again I guess.”

“Thousands of acres atop Clingmans dome were devastated by the same bug. also the existing root structure should prevent erosion until replacement trees can make up for the loss. It is terrible but may be the lesser of two evils.

“I actually bought some small chestnut trees, offspring of local blight resistant chestnut trees that are very prolific, big and healthy. I hope they thrive. Since it will be a while before we can tackle reshaping the back slope (the dropoff??!!! Nemo reference)they are going in to large planter pots.”

“Any kind of tree is good down here. During a drought a few years back, a horseman passed us on a Ruidoso trail mumbling something about cutting down the trees since they absorbed too much water.

To that I replied I had some scrub desert to sell.

As to insect infestations in more forested areas, sometimes its a hard choice when it comes to invasive species. I didn't know there was restrictions on firewood though - makes sense when you think about it.”
