Where to go in San Francisco

“i've got nearly a days layover in san francisco this thursday/friday. where should i go what should i see what should i do, especially if its close to the airport and/or accesible by bus?”

I had no idea it would be so cool.

On another day while in San Francisco Linus and I had lunch with Phaedrus on the waterfront with a view of The Rock.

If the young papa is not to busy you could add a unique character to your Who Have You Met list.”

“Ride the Merry-Go-Round down at Fisherman's Wharf.”

“You're flying into/out of SFO? You can take BART right to downtown. Go all the way to the Embarcadero station. Come out of the station, go toward the Ferry Bldg. Turn left. Walk up along the Embarcadero as far as you like. Avoid Pier 39, but enjoy the other touristy stuff, like Fisherman's Wharf. Walk around in the North Beach area. Go out to the Golden Gate Bridge. Eat seafood at the Pacific Cafe on Geary. Most of the City is easily accessible by bus or street car. Look up the route and schedule info you need at 511.org - I think you can buy an all-day pass or something. I'd offer to show you around, but I will just be getting back from DC Thursday night, and have to work on Friday. Email me if you need any other info!

“You might also take a walk south of Fisherman's Wharf towards Ghiradelli Square.

While you're at it, take a cable car ride to get you to Fisherman's Wharf (say from Union Square or something like that).”

“The Embarcadero has old trolleys from various cities including my home town, D.C. and my adopted home, Baltimore.

There was something about those '50s trolleys that brought out deep memories and a familiarity from riding them when I was a short person.

“When you leave the airport you need to take the Air Tran to the BART station, enjoy. They have clam chowder in sour dough bread bowls, it's fantastic.”

I'm about ready to hit the sack right now (8:30!) after only an hour or two of sleep last night on the red-eye, and tomorrow is our presentation of our draft report to the research project panel. After that, I will likely have to hang out with them (woo hoo). Then I head home on Thursday. Maybe next time!!

There are the wall murals in the mission district. CCC art in the Coit Tower that has a great view of the city and bay. As everyone else said see The Rock if you have time and the wharf. There is a museum of San Francisco at the wharf that was interesting. Seal Rocks and what is a visit to SF without going to the Haight District. A walk across the Golden Gate is fun. Go for a ride on a trolley...look for the conductor/crew that is having fun.
The mass transit is a great way to get around. I was there for a week and never had a car.

I would second Sticks' suggestions - the murals in the mission, the CCC art in Coit tower, the Haight for old times sake, and the Golden Gate bridge. Be prepared - it is often cold, foggy, and windy!!! And I would add Golden Gate Park and Lombardi Street.”

“Go wine tasting in and around Livermore. Just take Isabel Ave. (Hwy 84) south and you'll see signs 'n' stuff - lots of good, small wineries.

There's an Imax theater in Dublin - don't know what's showing there.

There's a LOT of hiking opportunities - go to ebparks.org to find something nice.

It's easy to BART into SF if you want to go into the city. You won't get stranded. And don't say "the BART" - it's just "BART." ;-)

“Hah! Believe it or not, I was at Lake Chabot at around sunset last night, going for a short run!!! My afternoon meeting was in Hayward, and I often try to swing by Lake Chabot if I have time to sneak in a run. I was on the path at the edge of the lake heading in a counterclockwise direction around it (although it's about a 9-mile distance all the way around, and I just ran for about a mile and a half out, then came back). If you were on the same path, I probably saw you!”

I was still dressed in work clothes, so I didn't go down by the lake-- it was also getting near dusk, so instead I walked on a "dog path" up on the hill a bit-- a little West (?) of the entrance to the lake area....

Since I was by myself, I didn't think it would be a good idea to walk around the lake in the dark...

I ended up meeting a local real estate agent and her dog...

Funny thing, I'm afraid of big dogs, but luckily, the dogs there were really well behaved (even though they weren't on leashes). Walked up to the hill where they had a monument for children who have died in the areas around the bay..... Beautiful sunset with bright red sky!!!

Too bad I didn't see your email until now, Bowlderman... I ended up going to ShBoom to take a Salsa dance class later that evening. It was okay, but the crowd was a bit older than I expected....”

“Hi pinkb! Yes that other path, up the hill from the main park would have been a more comfortable choice. I think the lake is pretty safe, but the trees, etc. are more dense and there are usually fewer people around at that time. I've actually never gone up the path where you went.”

I have a feeling that I'm older than you think, nimblefoot.

Back home, I go social dancing with my hubby-- and most of our friends range within the 35-45 group--a little more laid back & casual, a little more pep and energy than the people I saw at ShBoom... Many of the people there were more in the 45-60 range, I think. I felt like one of the younger people in the club and a bit put out by the some of the more obviously single guys there.

Social dancing involves social graces and when dancing with someone you don't know, trapping your partner's arm across your chest is not my idea of fun.... I ended up sitting in a corner and talking on the cell phone with my hubby and friends in Cali... :-)

Bowlderman-- the view on the top of the hill is very beautiful! I could see the San Francisco skyline and most of the bay... If it had been earlier in the day and I had been dressed in proper walking/running clothing, I would have checked out the lake.

One of the reasons why I went up to that path is that I met a local woman who seemed very friendly--or I may not have chosen to go up there by myself....I guess it's that mid-western safety sense that I have...
