Desert car camping

“I have a full size Bronco and am tearing it down and rebuilding it from the ground up and want to use it for camping in the desert in the west Texas deserts like Big Bend. This is for me, my wife, and son to get out there. My wife likes hiking and we have been car camping before but she is not (yet) interested in backpacking but she is getting more into the idea of being out there in nature. My question is this; what do I need to incorporate in it? I plan on putting an inverter for 110v power along with dual gell cell batteries and obvious safety equipment, what do you guys (and gals) think would make it "comfy"?”

“I would rig a tarp from the tailgate/hatch that would cover as big as an area as possible off the back. You could then use the rear of the vehicle as a staging area when cooking/cleaning, etc. and have a covered area (shade is at a premium).”

“better yet, configure the Top rack to accept support poles for a tarp, and extend the tarp over the entire vehicle....keeping the Bronco cool will be a priority.

Think WATER storage....a rack on the back doors for an extra Gas can and an extra water can......”

“Dump the hardtop and get a roll bar/bikini top for it.”
