I have used merino wool socks and love em. What to others think of them as base layers for shirts?

Is Icebreaker the go-to brand?

i ditched my favorite hiking tee for a wool MEC tshirt. i love it! even in hot weather it feels great. and that's the shirt i wore on the BFT in March. most of the time i didn't even need a wind layer.

I was wondering if anyone's ever used the Woolrich base layer, http://www.woolrichelite.com/ProductPages/BaseLayer.htm

I have two Smartwool shirts and one Ibex shirt and have been very happy. The only time I wear synthetics is in the very hottest months. I have heard a few people complain about itchiness, but I think that most people find them very comfortable. They also do not retain odors like many synthetic fabrics.

I have a Merino wool/synthetic blended shirt I bring and use on most trips. It’s about the only piece of gear I own that is useful year round.

I use Thor-lo socks that I picked up from Campmor. It's a synthetic material, akin to the warmth and look and feel of wool, except that its not harsh on the skin like wool, so you can ditch the liner socks and just wear these socks. They seem to breathe really well for synthetic socks too, which is especially useful for warm weather seasons (like summer).

Personally, I'm not a big fan of wool -- mainly because of the extra liners you gotta carry around (since it feels so rough and abrasive against the skin). Just too much of a hassle, IMHO.

Love merino wool. I have a medium-weight layer I use whenever its cool enough. Soft but warm, and retains most of its warmth even when wet.

Below that I wear silk. Warm in the winter, feels cool in the summer on warm nights.

Good quality Merino wool is soft and not harsh. Cheap Merino wool is just called that and you do get what you pay for.

I had a true Merino wool pull on and it was great until after about ten years the moths ate holes in it.

I love love love all of my icebreaker products... I think I have three shirts and the skin layer pants... they are awesome!!! And at the end of the season, steep and cheap has a ton of it for very good prices :)

Merino wool
I have used merino for many years, I have a number of mid-weight Smartwool zipfronts, MEC zipfronts and bottoms and a heavier Icebreaker with a mate to it on order now.

I have used many synthetics, good merino wool is vastly superior, especially in REAL BC cold down to -40*. I avoid synthetics now and stick with merino.

The Ibex Qu-T just arrived and it's a killer diller!  Even with 25% off and free shipping they're not cheap.... but the sale is still going on until the 28th.
