diving anyone?
How many of you dive? I was just curious, there is a dive specific lake opening up this summer near me in Texas. It will be the largest dive specific lake in the US, there are about 60 sunken boats, numerous autos including an old fire truck and a boom truck, NASA "stuff", a C-130 transport plane, a hellicopter, a submarine for wreck diver training, and two giant mammoths as well as a ton of other stuff. There is a full dive shop on site and a resturant is going up next door. Anyway I just thought I would put that out there in case any of you guys are interested.

Ok I am confused... when backpacking while scuba diving do the tanks count as gear for the purposes of ultra light bragging rights? Also is it required to put a ground cloth under the tarp tent to protect against moisture wicking if you are submerged?

hmmm, so that old myth about the scuba diver being found in the middle of a forest fire was really just a lost backpacker.

You guys are being mean! I guess you were so taken back, that you could not come up with reasonable responses. Regardless, you're still OK.

LOL.

I am a certified open water scuba diver. I haven't gone since a cruise a few years ago. I used to wreck dive quite a bit off the North Carolina coast. Nothing too deep though. Max depth I have been is 90 feet.

Ramblinrev,hyway, I love it!
hyway, I don't care go over about 60', the color gets washed out and you can just as much above 60' as you can below it. I have been and will go deeper but not often. The main reason for the post is if there are any interested in diving the lake and checking out south Texas, I am willing to show you around, a little southern hospility.

what's 'hospility'? is that anything like 'hospitality'? lol

Yes they do. They do what is called "a resort course", "discover scuba", and "try scuba" which consists of a video, flip cards to reinforce the information on the video, then a dip in the pool for learning some safety skills, and then on to a dive. If you decide to get certified they take the cost of the "try scuba" (or which ever one it is) off the cost of the course. They do this almost anywhere a shop is on or near the dive site.
Come on down after summer when the weather isn't so hot. Do you fish? I live on a lake.

I was a P.A.D.I. instructor for a few years when I lived in Austin, TX. That was a very long time ago. I used to certify students in their open water tests at Windy Point on Lake Travis.

Yea, Mammoths. The hole was dug for the sand and while they were digging it out they found two mammoths as well as a 5' tall armidillo. The Mammoths that are in there now were made from concrete truck mixing drums and legs, heads, trunks, tusks, ect. were welded on and they were placed where the remains of the real ones were found. I don't have the link to their website but if you want to see pictures of the lake and it's contents you can google "hydrosports scuba, lake jackson" and on their home page scroll to the bottom and click on the shop logo (a mammoth with a mask and snorkel).

I love diving almost as much as hiking and backpacking so I am more than willing to hook you guys (and gals) up if you want to come down and get wet. I am still on injured reserve but I will be good to go in a couple of months, about the time the lake will start hosting divers. It is going to be a realy fun placs to dive with way too much to see in a weekend.

I'm advanced open water, got about 40 dives under my belt. Just got a new badass octo setup

I love the carribean, wrecks, caves, and springs.
I hate open water in the GULF, and all quarries!!

I just got an Atomic reg setup, I have a 3 gauge console but I will be getting a computer soon. Did you get the power inflator with intergrated spair air? I want one of those too.
The Gulf and Quarries aren't as spectacular but it's better than nothing. I think the Scuba park will be way better than either.
They have some huge concrete pipe burried out there for cave diving training and the "yellow submarine" is for wreck diver training.
