Family camping

“I am looking for a family camping tent for my wife and my 13 year old son and me. It will be used ocasionally and for fair weather (I know weather is unpredictable). Do the fiberglass pole tents hold up under moderate weather? The aluminum poles modles are way expensive especially for the amount of use it will see.”

Get two smaller tents which will be 3000 times easier to set up and transport, then go to Wal-Mart and get the 10' X 10' "easy up" gazeebo that's in the camping aisle (its blue). Put the entrances to the tents under the gazeebo and you'll have an area to sit and a dry entrance to the tents in case of rain. And a nice rain/shade shelter you can use year-round for other things like at the kid's soccer/football/softball games.”

I've had a similar Coleman and also a $18 Timber Creek that all kept me dry in storms. The 7x7 is a sturdy size staked and guyed, and not too big for family backpacking. Much bigger domes are heavy and blow around in the wind.

The key is good fly coverage and a bathtub style floor.”

The problem with the Zeus, is it's single walled and not ventilated well. I've never had a condensation problem with any of the double wall Eureka tents.”

“We had condensation in our Eureaka! timberline occasionally. Mostly when the humidity outside was close to 100%.

I'm a huge fan of the Kelty three man tents. The Vortex and Gunnison are both wonderful, fairly light, and very roomy. They are built like brick poophouses and withstand incredible winds and storms.
Close out prices are usually around $150-$180 on them. But looky here:

You get 2 - 7' x 10' tents with a canopy that connects between them for less than $100. Our scout troop bought some of them for the younger scouts for camporees. They have seemed to stay dry in the rain. You can only buy them at Dick's Sporting Goods though. This gives you the option of pitching them apart if there is only smaller tent pads.”
