“Anyone know the official max number that CS #47 can hold. I also just found out the max group size is 8...i thought it was 10. Anyone else know some 2 mile hike in trails to an unrestricted campsite that has awesome swimming holes. I guess i'm gonna have to tell some folks to stay home.” 9:23:53 AM 6/05/07 “I believe the official total is 6. 6 is pushing it. You could do 8 if everyone double bunked. 47 is the funnest site in the Smokies, IMO. Here's camp: You could probably stick one more tent over next to where the fire pit is. It's a very tight site. Browse that folder to get an idea of what it looks like downstream.” 9:45:00 AM 6/05/07 “Yeah, I'll never forget Dayhiker saying, "It's only about 2 1/4 miles in.". He didn't say it was 2 miles straight the fukc up and 14 down. I'm just glad I didn't do something stupid like eat Hardee's Thickburgers just before and carry a 45 pound pack. LOL!” 9:48:49 AM 6/05/07 “unrestricted campsite?...i didn't know there was such a thing there?” 9:55:59 AM 6/05/07 10:00:18 AM 6/05/07 “1000' elev gain going in and 1000' elev loss to camp. It's only 3 miles.” 10:03:23 AM 6/05/07 “It's in the list on the back side of the Park's Trail Map: 8” 10:07:36 AM 6/05/07 “Guess my memory is bad. I'd be very skiddish about putting 8 on that site. 5 tents tops” 10:12:50 AM 6/05/07 “ok...i got 5 spots reserved for one weekend, and found out that 8 are available the next weekend. My friend went and invited 4 more than i was expecting. I guess i uninvite them, or find a bigger site” 10:15:57 AM 6/05/07 “Thrify- unrestricted (in the Smokies) just means that you don't have to get reservations to camp at the site. Most of the sites in the park don't require reservations but all of them do require permits.” 10:17:32 AM 6/05/07 “The thing about that site is that there really isn't anywhere to stick tents and you really can't understand that without going there. If any of you have hammocks it would help fit 8 on the site. My concern would be if the night you're going already has 3 sites taken then it's already going to be dang tight. You have to camp so close that if you're with your buddies it's not an issue, total strangers might have a different feel to it.” 10:30:23 AM 6/05/07 “Most strangers that camp with a TT crowd do, in fact, feel different the next day.” 10:33:40 AM 6/05/07 “but hyway isn't going on this trip...” 10:37:48 AM 6/05/07 “I guess that makes Opie the new "love broker".” 10:38:28 AM 6/05/07 “That's the truth !” 10:38:46 AM 6/05/07 “Is it time for the red rocket to make another TT appearance?” 10:38:58 AM 6/05/07 “Yeah, just ask the kid that ended up in Hwy's tent at trail days. lol.” 10:39:42 AM 6/05/07 “Poor Zack (or whatever his name was) will never be the same.” 11:10:04 AM 6/05/07 “"Most strangers that camp with a TT crowd do, in fact, feel different the next day." LOLz..” 11:59:04 AM 6/05/07 “what about #68, (steel trap) off of forney creek trail. It says it holds 8, and has a nice rock pool. I've done the hike down off of clingmans and back up, so me and michelle will be cake. but for a few newbies, do you think the 2.4 miles of 1700' of elevation loss the first day and gain the next will kill them?...lol Any other < 4 mile roundtrip hikes with slow, pooled clear creak water campsites?” 12:48:49 PM 6/05/07 “I'd be scared of that hike with a newbie. The first campsites in the Big Creek area might be nice but it's 5 miles. The site we stayed at on Goshen Prong is nice, but it's 7 miles.” 1:12:24 PM 6/05/07 “68's a nice site but i've never actually stayed at it...always wanted to but always opted to bypass it for 69 cause it's too short of a hike...i think 68 even has a slide too?...69's great too, a creak on each side but, to my knowledge, no swimming area” 1:36:16 PM 6/05/07 “if you're gonna be with newbies and you're gonna be in that area take em to 64...last time i was there, there was a portapot ;)” 1:37:57 PM 6/05/07 “I'm looking at West prong trail to campsite # 18 also. All else fails we can hit the Y, and stay at a car camp (blah)” 2:01:13 PM 6/05/07 “PS, Nigal, it was 2 miles up and 1 mile down. It took us 2 hours to go the first mile. It took us 10 minutes, yes, 10 minutes to go that next mile. chili called BS on that time, but it was 10 minutes. I realize that's 6mph, but we were haulin ass. Really, the packs were pushing us down the hill. I wish my pack had only been 45#'s on that trip. It's also a miracle I didn't see that thickburger again. Words of wisdom: Don't buy thickburger in Cherokee and eat while driving the 10 minutes to the TH. I was hurting bad on that climb.” 2:08:23 PM 6/05/07 “68 is another tiny site if memory serves correctly. If you aren't there first and get the main site pickings are quite slim. last edited: 6/05/07 2:32:54 PM” 2:32:10 PM 6/05/07 “What is GSMNP? :o/” 2:34:32 PM 6/05/07 “That evil national park that hates dogs” 2:36:15 PM 6/05/07 “LOL at HPM, they can't hate what they can't see” 2:47:13 PM 6/05/07 “CS#68 has a real nice slide area. It's 100-200 yds. long. For a longer slide area, Go up Big Creek to 37 or 36 for a campsite. Then go up past the Gunter Fork Trail Junction continuing on the Camel Gap Trail. One half to one mile from that junction should get you to the long slide area. It's beautiful.” 3:07:24 PM 6/05/07 “if i remember right the end of that slide is a little "hurty"...i think i remember a metal cable and a big boulder at the bottom?” 3:11:42 PM 6/05/07 “CS 18 is about a mile and a half from the TH, and has a creek and an area big enough for about 20 You could hike back down Bote Mtn Trail, across to School House Gap and up to White Oak Sinks for a nice dayhike http://www.cs.utk.edu/~dunigan/gsmnp/mrsid.php?res=1&olds=2&oldx=2388&oldy=2210&image.x=250&image.y=112” 3:18:52 PM 6/05/07 “BTW, the manway to White Oak Sinks is just past Turkey Pen Gap Trail on the left as you go up Schoolhouse Gap. It is a beautiful valley loaded with wildflowers. Anyone who hasn't been there in the spring needs to go.” 3:20:31 PM 6/05/07 “chili, how are the swimming possiblilities at 18? It only being 1.5 in, how trashed/occupied does it tend to be? also, can you e-mail me your new #...i called the old one i had and got someone else” 4:15:27 PM 6/05/07 “Opie, the water level in all the streams is pretty low. At 18 there are/were a couple of pools about three feet deep that don't allow much swimming but are great "relaxation" pools. Surprisingly enough, I never see a big crowd there. There are actually 4 separate tent sites there spread out over the most of an acre. Four big groups could camp there an literally not see the others. New phone number is on the way.” 8:03:06 AM 6/06/07
