Chimney Tops Campground.
Prior to the early '70s, the popular Chimney Tops Picnic Area in the GSMNP was the most popular campground in the park. The Service closed it as a campground--supposedly temporarily--to allow it to recover from overuse. I've been told that they will never reopen it as a campground and will keep it as a picnic area.

Do any of you know where there may be photos, online, of that place when it was still a campground?

By far the most common route to the top of Chimney Tops is the Chimney Tops Trail, which can be accessed from Newfound Gap Road (US-441). While the trailhead is clearly marked, it shouldn't be confused with the Chimneys Campground, which is a few miles to the north.

The trail ends at the foot of the south capstone (the higher of the two), but various unmaintained spurs cross over to the lower summit.

Tennessee has so much to offer nature lovers. There's so much to do around Chimneys Campground and It's always fun to be here. Outdoors recreation is abundant, some of the things you can do are hiking, whitewater paddling, and golf, so you might want to stay a while. This camp ground is located in the wonderful Great Smoky Mountains. Gotta get out of the house man, and if you happen to be in Tennessee, Chimneys Campground is a great local campground. Some people stay at Chimneys Campground in order to be close to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The excellent variety of local attractions and the great variety of outdoors recreation will have you coming back for more.

I haven't found a picture of the campground yet.
