I am planning a trip to the Roan Hight lands and would like to camp somewhere close Carvers Gap and then on Big Hump. Any info would be helpful. Thanks josh

closest water to big hump is just to the south, just on the other side of little hump. there's plenty of camping between carvers gap and 19. you can camp on or near the balds, theres overmountain shelter, which is a converted barn, theres little and big hump, and theres doll flats just to the north. lots of choices

and make sure you get to see the watusi longhorns. you actually walk right thru their field if you continue on to 19. theyre pretty intimidating looking, but actually quite docile

I prefer Little Hump. I haven't seen the cattle on that one. If you do push on to Big Hump you might want to consider going just a bit further to Doll Flats. Take a nerf football while you're at it.

The first time I went I had the lightest pack by far in our group. We stopped to rest at Overmountain shelter and to get water. We'd been warned that the water source between big and little humps was dry. A guy in our group had one of those collapsible water containers and so I got to hump an extra 2 gallons up Little Hump. I couldn't have gotten that water up Little Hump.

Water scattered about. Don't know how much rain there has been so some sources may be dry. Look about the saddles and below. The barn is pretty beat as is Stan Murry shelter.Don't park your car on 19-E, unless you want it broken into. Have fun.

even if the barn is beat, the view from it is outstanding

If things go as planned we are driving up Sunday night and parking at Mountain Harbour B & B. We will get a shuttle to Carvers Gap at about 8:30 pm and camping somewhere close to Carvers Gap Sunday night. If we feel up to it we might hike to Grassy Ridge for Sunday night. Monday night camp at Overmountain shelter. And Tuesday camp on Big Hump. This will be very very little miles so I can relax and do a lot of photography.

thats an excellent stretch for photography. theres about 4 or 5 treeless balds with outstanding views: jane bald, big hump, little hump, and 2 or 3 others. it was one of my very favorite stretches of the AT south of damascus

Looks like a good trip.

The first time I went to Roan we got to the TH around midnight. We parked at the top of the mtn where the restrooms are. There is no camping there, but if you walk 100 yards you're on the AT. You can camp along the AT, so that's what we did. The hike down to Carvers is pretty. I felt like I was in the Black Forest of Germany...not that I've ever been there, but that's what it looks like in my minds eye. It's an easy 8 miles from there to Overmountain.

It's probably a 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile from Carvers up to the top of the hile where the Balds start. I'd try to spend the night up there somewhere.

I recommend you don't make camp right next to the Longhorns. :)

I have done this same hike but in 2 days before. I was way head of the rest of my group when I came up on the long horns. I waited for the rest of my hiking pals before entering with them. Was not sure what to think.

I stayed on Big Hump once. Someone had actually had a fire up there. That's a big hill to carry firewood up. Maybe they were just burning cow patties.

There was a bull 3 feet from my tent in the middle of the night when I woke up. Maybe not the most comfortable feeling I've ever had, but they're actually pretty docile.

I want to stay at Overmountain Shelter in the fall so bad. Maybe I'll post a trip one of these days. The pics I've seen when the trees are all colored up look absolutely amazing.

I was just up there last weekend and it was great, but some dry springs. If you get to Carver's gap that late go on up to Roan High shelter and sleep in the cabin. But take your water with you cause the spring at the shelter was dry. Carver's gap had water from a pipe spring around past the pit toilet (no it is not down from the toilet, but I would still filter any water). Grassy Ridge was awesome and I would love to camp there. I read somewhere that water could be found past the peak of Grassy. Go down the saddle past the peak and to your left is supposed to be a spring. We didn't go that far, so I don't know for sure about it. Altho there are several wet seeps along the AT as you make the turn to the right to go up to Grassy. Stan Murray shelter is a dump, I would definetly stay at Overmountain Shelter. It has the greatest view of any shelter around. Instead of staying on the humps go on to Doll Flats, then you would not have such a long trip out. Just my 2 cents worth. Have a great trip!
