Great! This forum has always been very amateur and clunky. Surely the new owners actually know something about forum software. Hopefully a big change will drive off all the stale regulars who've been talking about the same thing over and over and over and over for years now.

At any rate, this forum has nowhere to go but up now.

Billy Morris, owner of Falcon Guides (via Morris Communications Company, LLC), doesn't do ANYthing for free.  I well remember the editorial in his Augusta Chronicle (our local paper) declaiming how wonderful it would be to take one of the last remaining places to backpack around here (Bussey Point Wildlife Management Area) and build another marina for Clark's Hill Reservoir.  The most important thing was to build the tax base.  I don't think Billy ever met an extractive industry he didn't like.

I'm proud and happy to say the hikers, the horseback riders, the blackpowder hunters and the bowhunters all came together to jerk a knot in our US Representative Mr. Norwood and Bussey Point remains a great place to hike.

Interestingly, I don't see any mention of preserving the outdoors in Hillclimb's objectives:

Looking at Trails.com it appears that much of what you are asked to pay for is copyrighted material. Trail guide descriptions and maps published in other places. Assuming the proper royalties are being paid for the distribution of this material (and I have no reason to suggest it isn't) I can understand the subscription fee. But there is no such content here except the occasional trail map linked to from already freely accessible websites. It makes little sense to me to begin to charge a subscription fee for this forum when the community is what is wanted and the community is free.

The skeptic in me says it's about the money. But the more rational side says what better way to attract people to the store for the guides and maps available than to whet their appetite with a (mostly) friendly free community of like minded trolls.

hi everybody!
good morning everyone, (is it afternoon yet for anyone?)

i'm glad to see you all have so very many opinions! you seem like a great bunch of hooligans and i look forward to working with you to keep this site the best it can be.

to address some of your concerns:

no, we are not planning to screw up the site, we want to leave it how it is as much as we can -less work for us, right? that means keeping the forums the same.

we will try our hardest to keep things rolling smoothly as we transfer the site to our servers, but please be patient, it's technologically tricky.

yes, our company owns Trails.com, but that site has a very different purpose than thebackpacker. Ramblinrev has it right, for Trails we pay money for the rights to publish other peoples' copyrighted material online, so it can be more widely accessed by the hiking world. thebackpacker has a totally different function and we are not going to turn it into Trails.

please keep sending your questions and opinions - i like feedback. this site is for you, the community who makes it a worthwhile place to visit. if you think i'm ignoring your concerns, it's probably that i just haven't seen what you wrote, among the miles of comments, so post again clearly with a Hey Elise.

Also, you must immediately join a TT group on a hike so we know that you are a real person.
