I think most of the long time members remember when matt was losing money here after the banner ad market crashed and put out feelers about making this a pay site or other ways to meet his expenses. I'm glad to see he was enough of an entrepreneur to turn it around and make it marketable.

Good luck in your current and future endeavors.

So other than a comment that they want to keep it mostly just like it is, has Elise and Co. given us any particulars yet? Bottom line, will they charge us anything?

Where I work, that's bureaucratese, the pc way to implement change, sometimes a 'divide and conquer' tactic. Sorry, elise, could be you mean it, could be you went to business school. It's a phrase that has come to mean change is coming and you ain't goin' like it, so we're softening you up first.

wannabp - sounds like you work for the state or something!!!

Matt created a culture here that has brought joy to many. I remember times when I first joined here I spent way too much time on-line, but I made friends all over the country and proceeded to meet them. I know of many other sites for many purposes, but I don't know of any that have brought more people together as friends than this one.

Whatever the new culture becomes, I hope the ability to make friends and meet great people is preserved. I even got to hike with Matt in the Sierras for a week. What a genuinely nice person!!

all this talk about "change coming" is ignoring one very critical element. Change is inevitable. Even if the website had not been transferred, it would change because any living entity changes.

It is said "Every pastor pleases everyone in the church that is served. Some are pleased when the pastor arrives, some are pleased while the pastor is there and some are pleased when the pastor leaves." I don't mind the prospect of "change". Rather I get concerned over how the change is handled and received.

The "Grief Cycle"

1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Bargaining
4. Depression
5. Acceptance

Where are we?
Most seem to be at 2.

Stovestomper interesting analysis but remember the grief cycle is not linear, nor is it cyclical. It can bounce around and skip around. Acceptance one moment can be followed by anger or bargaining the next. One thing is true tho, eventually something becomes normal again.

You're correct of course.
It does jump around, but as a very general guide it is valid, IMHO.

I totally agree..... just a technical point of clarification for those who may not be as familiar with it.

Hello, Clarice.

No offense, and maybe it's just me, but does she look about 8 years old in that picture? LOL! JK.

So what about this: We all log in here and tell each other about these bad a$$ places to hike, andput up detailed TR's with killer pics and all, then the next thing we know BP mag is publishing articles about our favorite places and they get totally over run, or we see OUR TR's or pics in their magazine. Isn't anything posted here the property of the web page?

Serious question. Someone please answer.

OH NO! I hope this works. It was hell when LOTT went away. I don't know what I will do if this fails.

Phil, not the state, the county. I've become disillusioned over the years. Asking for feedback is a great idea; asking and totally ignoring is weird.

Yes, change is the only constant. I've changed since my early TT days, but I still love the sense of community that TT offers.

Sing this to NEIL YOUNG's "My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)"

My my, hey hey
#&%!$ and moan is here to stay
It's better to burn out
Than to fade away
My my, hey hey.

Out of the blue
and into the black
They give you this,
but you pay for that
And once you're gone,
you can never come back
When you're out of the blue
and into the black.

The webmaster is gone
but he's not forgotten
This is the story
of a Johnny Rotten
It's better to burn out
than it is to rust
The webmaster is gone
but he's not forgotten.

Hey hey, my my
#&%!$ and moan can never die
There's more to the picture
Than meets the eye.
Hey hey, my my.

When I was in the navy I spent 30 days in correctional custody and the Marine in charge at night called all of us "RUST" the entire time because one of the guys that came down with me had notebook that he had drawn "Rust Never Sleeps" on it like on the album cover. The marine in charge thought he was quite clever when he confiscated it and made us start running in place saying "well you guys must be rust then, cuz your never gonna sleep either" can laugh at it now.

Holy crap, I go away for a week and a half and everything turns upside down.

Kudos, Matt, I know personally the pains of success and failure on the net. May you pay off your mortgage with the proceeds and enjoy some extra hiking.

Welcome Elise, hopefully good things are to come. Banning the trolls would be a good start...

A great trip report
This says a lot about change. I was clueless about Matts decision until I got the email today from the new mgmt.

I too loved this site and have made some wonderful friends through it. Thanks for that! Amazing to still see Phil, Nigal, Hobbit and even Bacpac still posting.

Change happens and we all move on to new things.

Great job Matt!
