laqtis, you are so wise to deduce all that after the fact. You have always been of the opinion that this place was better back in the day. I disagree, I think it is more that your core friends are no longer here, thus you see less value in TT for you personally. Plus, this site is much more politically balanced now than when I first logged in. I think you just miss the days when you could trash conservatives with impunity from your close knit circle.

We think of TT as "free" but of course it's not. We basically consent to be exposed to advertising in exchange for use of the service. It's a small price to pay but what it means is that in a sense -we- are "product"... a product that TT sells to advertisers.

Welcome to the modern consumer market where products (vendors) are consumers (of segmented data for targeted advertising) and the customers (us) are the products. It's flip-flopped from conventional "consumer/product" thinking and it's very much the way the system works these days.

I believe in this system and also believe it will work to our advantage. A new owner will be eager to retain their product (us) and in fact may work harder to appease us and increase the subscription rate.

For the record I like TT the way it is, however I also believe that EVERYTHING has room for improvement. Once you claim something is perfect it's just about time for something new to come along and knock it over.

The greatness of TT is the open dialogue and that it doesn't look like all the other forums.

I've got no use for Trails.commie or any other internet site that requires a paid subscription.

KEEP TT FREE!!!

"I'm not mad at all. I just think your attacks on matt are pretty childish. He owns this domain and can do with it as he pleases."

Perhaps we should get somethings straight, here; hopefully, it will avert the communication problem we seem to be having here.

I could give a rats shake if he sat on the sucker, pulled it, sold it, blew it -- whatever.

For a very long time, it was always held around here that one of the things that made it "neat", and "cool", and "enter your personal favorite", was mainly due to the fact that it wasn't "the other place". "That other place" was always used as one of the metrics in judging which was the "in-place" to be.

Now, "this place" becomes "that place". I could be wrong, but in the past when other places, like some of the gear companies we #&%!$ about around here, have changed ownership, or have made major changes in their business practices, people around here have used the term "sold out". Traditionally, isn't the term "sell out" usually used when a "mom and pop" goes corporate? Just because I use the term in appropriate context, people think I'm upset? That's the most incredible thing.

"laqtis, you are so wise to deduce all that after the fact."

Not wise at all, unless you count all the times I've been called a wise ass.

"You have always been of the opinion that this place was better back in the day. I disagree, I think it is more that your core friends are no longer here, thus you see less value in TT for you personally."

Speaking of deduction, your previous words couldn't speak truer of this very comment.

My position has always been that when I first started lurking and posting around here, the persona's that haunted this place were pretty creative and fun to read, along with the threads. Then, as time progressed, the atmosphere changed; due in part to losing some of those creative posters to a change over in format. In fact, there was a long period when this place was trying to find a good format "identity". An way, then events with 9/11 and the following "war" split and polarized this place. That was another change. We lost some creative posters during that time period, and the atmosphere changed once more. This process repeats itself now every year or so.

So, it's the loss of the creative posters, and threads that I am claiming were better "back in the day". I know you joined a year after I did; perhaps you were not able to witness some of that stuff.

"I think you just miss the days when you could trash conservatives with impunity from your close knit circle."

Ah, hyway, with all serious due respect, it's apparent you haven't paid too much attention to my political positions. You first logged in, in 2002, during the days were I fully supported the present administration, the current action in the Middle East, and dutifully trashed Democrats every day, and twice on Sunday, on this board. So as far as me being able to have "impunity" from trashing the presently corrupt, inept, rapists that used to be my former party from a very early age, during the supposed "glory days of tt as proclaimed by laqtis" claim your laying out their; I just don't think it holds up.

Perhaps another shot at it, ole boy?

I don't live in the midwest. The national appeal of this site is what is so cool. I often describe it as a free guide service. For example, HPM plans a trip to his favorite backyard locale and people from half the country show up. THey just show up without really having to plan and are introduced to a section of the country they wouldn't have ever seen. It works great.

What DayHiker said..........

I love the way people from all over the place find their way to places that they have never been to any time of the day or night.
Some have found their way in the dark to camp sites miles from trail heads to meet up with people they have met or not.

I also like the diversity. I disagree with lots of people on here, but thoroughly enjoy the different views. I learn about non hiking things I would never have otherwise been exposed to. Let's face it, most of peers in the real world are probably pretty similar to us. TT lets us get exposed to people who are very, very different. I value that.

i have always thought of it as a backpackers forum not a backpacking forum... a group people with a common interests sharing ideas... that whole "campfire talk" analogy... backpackers talking about kayaking, climbing, politics, food, life woes, dating, jokes, current events, etc, etc. it wouldn't be any fun if we could only talk about backpacking.
