how long is the knife edge? that could mean a lot of time at serious exposure for the person setting protection

i would guess 100' from the photos. all accounts i have read say the rock quality on the knife edge is much better than the remainder of the route to the summit.

i still can't see that image, and i tried to get to to it by ip address. i would bet it's in your cache as well but i'll accept this as a personal problem and move on.

I believe the knife edge is only about 70 yards - give / take a few. It's not a big deal, but its is very exposed. Some people do the but scooch, others do a hand traverse. It's good quality rock and some people say its way more stable and better then the talus that is just below the summit.

Theres a video of someone crossing the knife edge?! I was talking about the 360 from K2. Man I'm excited but have my work cut out for me too. I need to read up.

I have to ask, and I'm definately showing my inexperience here but WTF is a brain bucket going to do if you plummet from the knife edge? Allow your family to have an open casket? Seriously, some plastic and foam is not going to save your life in that situation. I just keep thinking this is like jumping from a plane with an umbrella instead of a parachute.

the "brain bucket" is for falling rocks coming from above. so, no, not much use on the knife edge. used for when youre climbing up some debris field

i might not ever put it on, but ill defineitely take one on the needle and capitol climbs

I'd wear it anytime there's rock above your head. Stuff falls all the time, especially when your below steep terrain (45 deg or greater). You should assume that there are people moving above you and that rock will fall. Even a fairly small rock falling from as much as 20 feet above you will knock you silly or worse. :)
Roam Around

i often won't wear one when i climb, which is dumb, but i generally wear one when i belay. the idea of a falling rock from a climber knocking me silly and my leaving a climber without a belay is a scary thought. it's one thing to make a choice to take a personal risk but quite another when you risk your safety along with the safety of others.

I see. That makes sense. Thanks guys. Like I said I need to do some reading. This would obviously be my first time. *Gasp!* Does that mean Crash is going to take my cherry? I'm not sure how I feel about that...

That Theron Welch site is down, but you should check it out. There are untold descriptions of crossing the knife edge on the net, since a couple of hundred people do it every weekend.

That does detract from the sense of accomplishment. You want to be able to say "look what we just did! Isnt that incredible?!" and the guy next to you shruggs and says big freakin deal, I did that 10 times this summer. That is why I want to start looking for the really remote trails, and places. Stuff that is way off the beaten path, for my future hikes. The fewer people that have done it, or been there - the bigger the thrill for me.

a couple hundred every season probably though. It's a 14er and thus heavily traveled, plus it's close to Aspen.

take 'er easy there Jim. LOL! I was just trying to remember who recently marked themselves confirmed, and you two were the only ones I could think that may have been maybe's.
I thought maybe somebody forgott so change their sign-in before posting that they were confirmed. LOL! Don't take any offense, I meant it good naturedly.

mg: tj is the one who recently confirmed as a yes, altho in my mind he has been a yes for awhile, for hes always talked like he was in for sure

and yes, these are popular trails, but im not going for a super duper remote trip. ive just always wanted to bag some 14'ers ever since my first colorado hiking trip 6 years ago. this is still beautiful country. better than spending a week on the adena trace or in the deam
