if you are always on top of something then it's not that big of a deal in my mind.

So we'll carry Jim's gear and not stress about it any more. Done.

BTW - I should be getting my copy of Roach's Colorado's 14ers in the next couple days.

i read up a little bit on the other massive route that you mentioned, tj. i think its defineitely a do-able option for us. its considerably shorter, less elevation gain, and about the same degree of difficulty. it actually meets the other trail at the top of the ridge. so, either way we go, we've got trail most of the way to the top, then some trail-less hiking and scrambling to the summit. after we do elbert, we can decide what to do. the trailhead is only a couple miles further down the road, so the logistics are not an issue

I'm also interested in following the ridge to the north Massive peak if there's time. I could have done it the first time but it was my second 14er and all the locals told me I was gonna die up there. You know the ones on the other site who say you have to acclimate for two weeks, start the climb by stumbling around in the dark for a couple of hours, and that lightning strikes everyone above treeline at the stroke of noon.

i dont plan on stumbling around in the dark for a couple of hours, but i dont plan on wasting much daylight, either. hope you wont think im one of "them"

remember, my body will be two hours ahead of your body, seeing as how i will be from 2 time zones ahead of you. couple that with the early rise to catch the plane. i'll be dead to the world at dark:30, and buzzin like a beaver at sun-up. but dont worry. i wont blow the bugle before youve had a chance to get your beauty sleep

i'll prolly be too stoked to sleep.

hey, will the places we will be camping have trees and such for my hammock or will i have to revert to sleeping on the ground like the rest of you primates?

i would bring a tent. we might be camping where there are no or few trees. for that reason, a bear canister might be preferable to a bear-bag

Thanks for offering your tent for my food storage Crash! Mine gets a bit cramped with my long frame in there. ;-)

I would love to do a CO peak bagging trip. I'm heading to Quandary this coming weekend for my first 14er with a few of the natives...should be fun. When are you planning on heading out this summer?

Hey MG, good!

Got a good dayhike in today in the Dry Gulch area just above Boulder. Beautiful views of Long's and other mountains I can't remember now. ;) Friend was spouting them off to me... lol

It helps to head out with someone who knows the peaks. I just sit there and say, "There's a mountain and to the right of it is another mountain and to the right of it.... etc, etc" ;)

Crash, I believe you are actually 9 hours ahead of me.

Yogi, there are lots of trees in Colorado, but it freezes most nights above 10.000'.

Chowda, I hope its warmer for you than when I was there a couple weeks ago. You might also try Bross from the bristlecone pine area (there's a jeep road that goes to the top). It's just down the road from Quandry.

currently, i believe i am 15 hours ahead of you, tj (youre on central time, right?

in august, i'll be an hour ahead of you (not 2 hours like i originally said)

cold temps (sub freezing) are not an issue with my hammock setup. no having a place to hang from is always an issue. worst case i can pitch the hammock's rainfly and sleep on the ground.

Crash, 15 is right - I counted backwards. But I'll still be an hour ahead of mountain time. Hiking at first light is how I like to climb.

Capitol Lake is above treeline, but it may be desirable to camp in the woods below. As much as I like the idea of camping above treeline, I've had bad experiences every time I've tried it (wind and rain keeping me up most of the night). But we may have good conditions and try it. I haven't been there myself. There will be hammock trees everywhere else (I've been to those places).

i dunno why, at first i was thinking you were on mountain. i later realized you were on central

the campsites arent right at the lake. i believe they are actually in or near the trees. but i think its a good idea for jim to be prepared to not be able to hang a hammock, especially at capitol and colony lakes (crestone needle basecamp)

I'm an Idiot
I'm a HUGE Patriots fan having grown up in MA and somehow managed to book my Quandary climb the day of the Super Bowl. So I'll be watching it with who the hell knows...

Toejam - I hope it's warmer too. I'm climbing with 6 other people from the area who planned the climb.

I'm glad you found some people to climb with. That will make it more fun (as long as they are all capable). You can always record the game. But it doesn't start until 6:00 p.m. mountain time, so if you aren't in a bar in Breck by then you may be praying for a SAR team.

Yeah - I shouldn't miss the history making Pats winning their 4th in 7 yrs, if I do, I will be in trouble. Oh Crash, it's about time Brady started getting recognition for being a better QB than Manning. Like all Manning's, I'm planning on Eli choking when the pressure hits.

most people i know are already saying that anyways. whaddaya mean its about time?

no one expects the giants to win, so its not a choke if they lose

Yes, but all of a sudden everyone loves Eli. A couple months back he was Rex Grossman. It drove me crazy over the years that while Brady was winning Super Bowls, most 'experts' still believed Manning to be the better QB - I'm just saying it's about time. I actually think what he's done in the past is more unbelievable than what he's achieved this year.

Just my 2cents.
