Yeah, he lead that. That's a huge feather in your cap my friend. It's hard to believe that your first climb was this part April at lil ole Rick's Rocks. And Noooooooo, I am not leading it next time. Maybe next spring if my nads grow a ton.

DC - rockclimbing.com is a great website with a very active forum. GM and I are both registered there. Some of those guys are pretty harsh though, and can make a TT flamer look like Will Rogers.

hmmmm, that reminds me... perhaps some links to our favorite rock climbing websites may be in order.

There's a cool sequence on the crux that Gowser shot while belaying.

It's bad enough that the belayer is taking pics but DURING the crux? LOL!

I laugh because the guy belaying GM is very very experienced and I'm certain he had GM 100% safe. Only when I knew GM had a solid stance and not moving did I take pics while on belay. Even then I had a death grip on the brake (and a few wraps around my leg) while taking a pic with the other hand.

next time out i swear i'll remember my camera. gotta figger out how to get pics while holding the belay
Roam Around

Now ya know. ;o)
The wrap around comes in handy on rappels when your partner (not saying names) tosses the rope in a tree and then you have to untangle it.

Ever do a hip belay, Roamy? I don't recommend it but when you get to the first pitch on lead, build the anchor and get the belay device ready for your following partner..... oops... where are ya belay device? It works but never ever let the rope get close to the skin. The rope burns are finally starting to heal.

Rock porn. LOL! Hey, when you visit the gunks and see all the hot climbing women, you'll be singing bow chicca bow bow.

If ya got a couple minutes, check out the Munter Hitch. It's a quick way to set up a belay when you drop or forget (it happens) your belay device.

i am off to the rock gym to beat myself up. i am struggling with a 5.9 route that i can only get up about 2/3 of the way... "dazed and confused". i am also going to climb an arch on lead that goes up (easy climb) then upside down and over back down the other side. i generally fall but one of these days i'll make it... i tend to think too much and you just have to move in one slow steady motion... the longer you think the more tired you get until you can't get over the hump.

Recycle Your Old Rope!
Saw this post over on mountainproject.com

figured it was worth spraying about.
-------------------------------------------

Sterling Rope would like to invite you to take part in our new Rope Redemption Initiative. Rather than having that rope sit in the back of the closet or worse, sit in a landfill. Return it to Sterling and we will recycle it for you! That's right, simply send us your old, used Dynamic Climbing ropes and we will send them off to get melted down and re-made into carpet fiber, telephones, coat hangers, even children's toys!

It's easy:
Step 1) Put your Rope in a box

Step 2) Put this address on the box

Sterling Rope Company, INC.
C/O Rope Redemption Program
26 Morin St.
Biddeford, ME 04005-4413

Step 3) Ship us the box anyway you want (USPS, UPS, FedEx, Carrier Pigeon, Transporter) whatever! U.S. Postal is real cheap!

Step 4) Sleep well at night knowing that you've thought outside of the box, kept more garbage out of the landfill and made some children very happy. Karma, ain't it grand!

If you have any questions, contact: climbing@sterlingrope.com

Something else you can do with your old ropes.....donate them to your local Boy Scouts, Fire Department or Rescue team, with the understanding that they are to be cut up in 5'/6' (or what ever) pieces for knot tying practice.

Where I work, we get requests for rope for knot practice all the time. These groups are usually thrilled to get old rope for free rather than buy new rope to be cut up into pieces.

Oh yea, keep a few pieces for yourself ;-)

my local gym will do this but they insist on cutting up the ropes (fine with me!) they know people well enough to know that they might not actually do what they say they will do to save money.

Maybe (k)not but I can tie a figure 8 follow through with my toes.

Check this out. The online version of Climbing Mag has a nice article and great pic of the Gunk's High Exposure route, the one that GreenMonkee did last week.

Who climbed this past weekend? I know the Monkee hit the Gunks again (he called last night to rub it in) and did 4 new leads. I won't be climbing for another 3 weeks :o( unless you count Rainier next week.

Siula Chico - First Ascent on West Face
Reported by Alpinist:

http://www.alpinist.com/doc/ALP20/newswire-peru-siula-chico-west

Spanish alpinists Jordi Corominas (49) and Oriol Baro (27) made their mark in Peru's Cordillera Huayhuash by sending, in alpine style, the unclimbed west face of Siula Chico (6265m) via a committing 900-meter line (VI ED3 AI5+R A2) in May.

-------------------------------

Simon Yates (from Touching the Void) was turned back on that face a few years back.

what is pinkpoint and redpoint for us climbers?
Ramblinrev
5:45:15 PM
7/11/07

pinkpoint is where you climb a bolted route after the quickdraws have been set.

redpoint is where you would climb a bolted route and place the quickdraws as you climb.

at least that is how i understand the terms.
Jimmy san
6:17:02 PM
7/11/07

Rev - pinkpointing is climbing a route that has been pre-protected. Meaning, someone placed protection on the route beforehand, probably by rappeling. The climber clips in to the protection as he climbs, saving him/her the effort of placing the pro. If the climber hangs onto a piece of protection, he is no longer pinkpointing, he is hang dogging.

Redpointing is climbing the route and placing protection during the climb.

One step further is "on sight" which is climbing the route and placing pro without having seen the route before.
Pennsy
6:20:35 PM
7/11/07

or what Jimmy just said. I haven't done a sport route yet, but I would say his explanation is correct.
my explanation is my interpretation for trad climbing. Of course I could be all wet, still being a noob and all that.

don't count me out of the noob club... like a lot of ppl on this board i have more vocabulary than experience.
Jimmy san

7/11/07

Ramblinrev
6:28:45 PM
7/11/07

Redpoint - To lead a climb without falling or dogging after a number of attempts. This is different from onsight, where the climb is lead without falling or dogging on its first attempt.

Pinkpoint - To red-point a climb where the pro and runners have been pre-placed.

Flash - To lead a climb with no falls or dogging and with no previous attempts on the climb, having recieved beta beforehand and/or seeing someone else climb it.
GreenMonkee
9:14:18 PM
7/11/07

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_climbing

An ascent is considered a red point once a climber has attempted a given route and failed to climb it on the first attempt, but succeeded on a subsequent attempt while placing quickdraws.

An ascent is considered a pink point once a climber has attempted a given route and failed to climb it on the first attempt, but succeeded on a subsequent attempt while climbing on pre-placed quickdraws. In some climbing communities, a pink point is considered to be a red point. In other climbing communities, this term has been abandoned entirely.
