TT Basic Skills Trip Thread

“I'm considering taking off a whole week and bring the wife with. I know nothing about this area. What other things are there to do and is this a good area to plan a whole week? If so would this campground be a good staging area for us to stay to whole week?”

“you can hike the AT and a some other trails, there is the Hot Springs Spa across the street from the campgrounds, go bike riding or just hang out and relax in a cabin or in a Bed and Breakfast. I think there are a few of them in town

Unfortunately, they don't have Lone Star. It's been a couple years since I had one. If you show up without them, I might go postal.”

“nope pretty easy..beer or savage gulf...hmmm I can walk to the Pub for a pitcher of beer or have to hike in a with a 6 pack of beer....walking to the Pub sounds better”

“stomper, yes it is. Out of all the backpacking/hiking trips I have ever been on only one got out of hand and that was Savage Gulf and no kids were on that trip...of course it gets brought up time and time again by certain people like it is an everyday event.

dayhiker, same trip. div came in Friday evening with SS. Father and Mother Goose were wandering around trying to find the parking lot a 1/4 mile away....lol

“That trip was a TT Classic...I don't know about ya'll...but I don't know if I ever laughed so hard and much in all my life.....

I will volunteer any skill sets that I can offer, what do people want to learn about?

This really ought to be promoted as a rookie school so to speak, where you learn the tricks of the trade. Old and new can carry something away from the skills.

What would be neat would be get a sponsor or just collect a buck from everyone and vote who taught the most pracatical skill in the best way, and let them have the jackpot.

I am no subject matter expert but I do know back country survival skills, pioneer skills, and "roughing it skills" from my days in scouts, as a forest ranger, and as a revolutionary war re-enactor.

I am sure that I will learn something useful from everyone there teaching.”

It's MILITARILY oriented, so try to get beyond the tactical aspects of the information and key in on the SURVIVAL information it puts out....

One last thing that I HIGHLY agree with from this site:

You will not learn the skills you desire by reading about them, you learn through HANDS ON....I will teach a few of these techniques at Hot Springs if it's requested, just come prepared to DO things, not just sit and listen to lecture.....

“I didn't mean to sound like a priest; heck it wasn't too long ago that I had to crawl from a TT'er campfire to my tent from too much libations.

I am looking forward to this trip and the skill section. I bet everyone, no matter how many miles they have on their favorite socks, will learn and depart with some nugget of knowledge.

I have some friends, who my the nature of the right parents; have gone and backpacked some great areas of the US but they can't build a campfire. They have no idea how to combine a map and compass, They can't identify edible food around here.

They have the best gear, the newest stuff and wont learn a damn thing on how to care for it or field strip it if needed.

I guess that is why I didn't want to get too sidetracked.

oh puleese.... not when coleman has come out with a "Mr. Coffee" type drip that sits on the stove. We need cutting edge stuff here.”

“Mast General is awesome. I've been in a couple of them. Boone and Banner Elk were the ones I went to. I've seen the one in Asheville and it looks very 50's. The others look 50's too, 1850's that is.”
