Suggestions
This trip is set for November 9-11, 2007.

Hot Springs campground.

I think the first thing we need to do is set the agenda on skills we will cover.

I know we will want map reading and fire building.

I think there is clear interest in the reflector oven.

I for one want to see best practices in pitching a tarp. Might sound easy, but I would like to see one pitched in various configurations.

What else? I don't think we need any more than a dozen areas or we just can't cover it. Actually a half dozen sounds more manageable.

what about finding your tent in the middle of the night after you've had too much to drink?

And getting as much alcohol into a campsite without puting your pack weight over 25# that you can?

Common, useful knots would be good. I'm stilled awed by how HOI tied up my food bag at Sipsey one time without even tieing a knot.

1. Map reading
2. Fire building
3. Knots
4. Reflector Oven
5. Tarp configuration

Keep it coming. I will go back and look at the post by ChuckD that had some good ideas.

That presentation can tie in to the first aid course nicely.

First aid is pretty complex unless we have someone who has taken the Wilderness First Aid course or can teach it. I wonder if the outfitter in Hot Springs can get someone to teach it?

Yes, this will not be a drunken TT party. I am not going to make some crazy statement that NO alcohol will be allowed as I have no way of enforcing that. However, let's make it clear...

This IS a KID FRIENDLY trip.

I'll see if I can make it with the kiddos then. I'd also like to take them to the Sipsey trip 2 weeks earlier. I'll just see how it goes, but would love to make it.

Chili...what do you want Taught?

For my money Stabalization of the patient after a fall, opening airway, stopping bleeding, these are major things.

How about covering the basics of Widerness Survival, after all you never know when you could twist an ankle, lose your pack in a stream crossing, etc.!

XL, if you can head up a First Aid course, I think it would be great. Basics after major injury and one thing I think would be great is treatment of hotspots, blisters.

Dang, I'm out. ;)

It's a really good idea, chili -- and a excellent service to the community. A lot of us adults know all of this, but wow, what a great opportunity to pass along that knowledge to the next generations of hikers and backpackers.

Divinity -- Come on a hike with me baby, and I'll give you something to eat.

;) Ok.. totally uncalled for... I see your Tc5 hints though. Let's see if we can work out something in May 2008.

(I've actually got my entry already decided on. I selected it a month ago or so.)

Thanks for reminding me Chili, one of our scouts packed in a big steak for himself on a trip. He cooked it beautifully over an open fire and in the process of transferring it to a plate he dropped it in the sand. The collective "Oooohhhhh!" of dismay was impressive.
