RUBY!!!
That's right, I finally caved and bought a kayak.... a Wilderness Systems' Pungo 120 (recreational). I'm a beginner, so don't need anything TOO exceptional.

She's red - flaming like my red hair that I just dyed back... I named her "Ruby" :)

I WANNA GO OUT TOMORROW AND TRY HER OUT!!!

I'd have suggested something longer and skinnier so the other paddlers don't leave you behind. But sometimes I enjoy my 12' boat. It's a great party boat you have - the cooler will fit nicely between your knees.

That's where I keep my cooler, I was just going to try to fit the dog there today as a matter of fact. I have friends with all sorts of kayaks. And I think a recreational kayak gives you the most bang for your buck. You can manage the tight spots on a small river and go just fine across the lake. If I were out on Lake Superior, I'd rent a sea kayak. My perception and the Wilderness systems are just great for playing in.

Nice.

Only thing I would recommend is a spray skirt for the cockpit as waves can put a lot of water in that huge area. You might also put some flotation in the forward peak as it will flood front first.

Enjoy!

Actually the next thing on my list is a spray skirt.... I couldn't get everything at once because it was already a nice chunk of change out of my pocket! I'm a beginner anyway, so white water is not quite in my future yet lol.

Perfect kayak for floating rivers on a hot day.
Don't need a spray skirt for that!
My comments are more for open water.

The cockpit is so big, Om would take her doggie for rides.

Her yak is similar to yours.

a spray skirt is all-around a good thing. as you learn how to put your boat further on edge you will start to take on more water in your cockpit. also, at least once per yer (as in right now this year...) i wind up getting a bad sunburn on the inside of my thighs... sunscreen helps but in really hot weather or rainy weather the added protection from the elements is very welcome.

most ppl i know swear by neoprene skirts over breathable nylon. i don't own a neoprene skirt but the general complaint is that they leak... and to a certain extent this is true... but they are also very breathable and i don't have any expectations of staying dry while in my kayak on the water... a few cups of water doesn't freak me out. in fact one of the reasons i go on the water is to get wet... it's a watersport after all. they are also less expensive. anyway, my point here is that you really aren't giving up much if you don't get one made from neoprene and you might do better balancing your investment between a less expensive skirt and getting better self-rescue gear, a nice paddle (or a spare), etc.

outfitting the boat was a lot more costly that i thought, but i also don't think it HAS to be expensive.

Spray skirts trap in a LOT of heat, I only use them if the waves are up.

look into a "mini-skirt" it covers the front of the yak and gives you a zippered storage compartment. I had never heard of them, but it was a x-mas gift from a kayaking buddy.

graska, never heard of that either (but there's a lot i haven't heard of in the kayaking world so far).... i'll look into it, thanks!

chocolate, i'm trying it out this coming saturday. me and some friends were supposed to go tubing - now THEY will go tubing and I will be kayaking next to them! (up at "River Country" www.rivercountry.net)

Sierra Trading Post had some kayaking gear in their catalog. You might want to check out their deals. I saw a couple skirts in there.

It seems to me that if the manufacturer thought you needed a skirt, they wouldn't make the cockpit opening 45" long. And there's no need to edge a 12'x29" kayak that will do donuts with a couple of sweep strokes. Scorchy's paddling mode appears to be more flop your legs on the deck and get a tan. So a spray skirt seems like a waste of money, plus they are a pain to stretch over a 45" opening. This is not an eskimo boat that requires eskimo gear.

I'd go with a forward float bag, since you prolly won't put camping gear up there anyway.

Sounds like a good trip scorch you'll be doing figure 8's around them tubers! Don't sweat the scratches on your new boat it means you actually used it! This time of year the Delaware is warm and slow.... bring a sponge or bailer in case you tip. put your stuff in ziplocks inside a stuff sack and tie it into your yak if ya don't have a dry bag. don't forget the sunblock!

I'm kind of ignorant about all of this boating stuff. Why would you buy such a nice boat, then try to ride one of these around in the water??

No, bacpac, I've seen pics - scorchmeister isn't much of a cow... :-0

So, when you take your boat to a lake or stream, do you just leave it on the shore and guide the yak into the water? Do you steer by the horns? Like I said, I don't know much about all this....

The chances of tipping that boat are really remote. The mini-skirt is actually called a splash deck and it's brand name is Seals. I keep all my stuff in a drybag, but I keep my camera and something to munch on in a zip-lock in the zippered compartment of the splash deck. Very handy. Nothing like floating along on a slow current with your legs resting ontop of the boat. ENJOY!

I love my yaks...though I imagine they won't feel very loved when I'm swearing while loading the three of them up later today...

I bought a spray skirt with my first kayak, and returned it as soon as I tried it - it was too confining. I'm not an ocean paddler and I don't mind getting a little wet - heck, I swim most of the time I go kayaking anyway.

Enjoy!
