Home invasion. 10 teens broke into a home, brutally raped and beat a mother and forced her son to have coitus with her.

An AR carbine with a 30rd mag would be an ideal weapon to deal with this kind of scenario.

A shotgun with bird shot is the best firearm for home protection. At close range an ounce of lead is an ounce of lead and you won't kill your neighbors.

Jesus what an ignorant dumba$$. Quit spreading this urban myth. Anything that is going to reliably stop a criminal is going to shoot through walls. Bird shot is NOT a self-defense load.

Again, if you are being a responsible gun owner and your firearm is locked up, these guys kick in your door and there are 10 armed men in the room suddenly, what good does your gun do you?

I own several shotguns. A total of 14 firearms. I can assure you that at 20 feet #6 shot is as deadly as a .357.

What makes you think a firearm is a magical cure-all, roseymonster? It's a tool. Sometimes it will help, sometimes a person is SOL.

Multiple perp home invasions in general, though, are a strong reason to keep so-called assault rifles legal.

shot gun with bird shot sounds smart. I worry about the 357 mag ....u shoot it and then what? does it go through the home intruder...through the wall behind him...and through the woods? That freaks me out. I wonder if shooting 38s out of the 357 makes it any safer. But then I could just upgrade to the 45. I mean sure its big...leaves a bigger hole but its slower...less velocity more stopping power. That'd be good for "on trail" protection. Thats what I'll do.

The fact that he looks like he's just a scared kid is what will get him off with some probation, and it will be sealed off info once he turns 18.
I have to agree somewhat with Mutt, though. My 12ga. is loaded w. 000 buckshot, the .45 has hydra-shock HP's, and the .223 has JHP's. At close range will they penetrate walls? Absolutely. That is why shot placement is critical. Mutt is also right in saying that sometimes you are SOL. A gun is not a cure-all, but it does give you a helluva lot better chance at survival if you can employ it.

Oh noes, bacpac is convincing people!!

A 2 second google search turned up an article explaining why birdshot is not a good self-defense load: http://www.firearmstactical.com/briefs10.htm

Birdshot, because of its small size, does not have the mass and sectional density to penetrate deeply enough to reliably reach and damage critical blood distribution organs. Although birdshot can destroy a great volume of tissue at close range, the permanent crush cavity is usually less than 6 inches deep, and this is not deep enough to reliably include the heart or great blood vessels of the abdomen. A gruesome, shallow wound in the torso does not guarantee a quick stop, especially if the bad guy is chemically intoxicated or psychotic. If the tissue crushed by the pellets does not include a vital cardiovascular structure there's no reason for it to be an effective wound.

And that's why a .223 AR carbine is arguably superior to a shotgun. It's easier to aim with its superior ergonomics, it has much less recoil, and that leads to fast, accurate follow-up shots.

A good point. Can't argue with that.

Talk about prejudice, I sit here in the brain pan of a major airline with my NRA hat on and people all look at me like I'm about to start shooting people. Most folks give me strange looks, but if anyone comments it is just to state that I make them uncomfortable.

"According to the police report, a man knocked on the woman's door at about 9 p.m. and told her he had a flat tire. The mother and son, whom police have not identified, went outside and were ambushed by a group of gun-wielding suspects."

Hold on, I'll be a good samaritan and help you with your flat tire. Lemme just get my assault rifle...

I'm not trying to make any points with my clothing. Just wearing a hat. The only reason I wear this one to work is because it is new and all my other ones are dirty or stained so they are not suitable to be in the office. You don't own any clothing that has a logo embroidered on it Y2? Do you feel you are making some sort of statement every time you wear these clothes?

I'd be highly surprised if Bacpac reared his ugly head in this thread again. I don't think he has the integrity to admit he's wrong. If he still tries to pretend he knows what he's talking about, I have a lot more sources confirming that birdshot isn't good for self defense. So he's screwed no matter what.

I bet he thinks you don't even have to aim a shotgun because the shot expands so much you can't miss. What a bafoon.
