Considering a TarpTent by Henry Shires

“I was just wondering if anyone here has used any of Henry Shires products, especially the Squall 2 and Cloudburst 2? If so what did/do you think of them? I am trying to get into a lightweight (although not necessarily ULTRA-light)hiking mode. Any observations are appreciated.”

Don't know what happened (may not have pitched the back of the tarp tight enough...) but after 8 hours of a driving rainstorm we awoke dry and comfy (unlike some of our bretheren.

“I have the original Cloudburst and love it. If I were going to replace it I'd get the new Cloudburst design.
I tested the newest one of Henreys...the "Contrail" and didn't like it at all. Too much fuss to pitch. Paige has the Contrail also and feels the same way. I like simple.”

“I have the Contrail. So far I really like the tent (floor space, head room, weight), but I am not completely sold on the rear strut design.”

“How do the tarptents compare to the Six Moons Designs products? I can't decide between a Contrail and the Lunar Solo. Any opinions/experience?”

“Never used a six moons, but I like the look of them. There was six moons tent amidst the tarptent community in Jackstraw's pic above. It seem to have more headroom but otherwise be very similar. The tarptents appeared to me to be a simpler pitch, but i wasn't paying that much attention.”

“Chili has a six moon i think. Had a good bit of condensation one trip...but it was understandable...heh”

“I get condensation sometimes in the Henry Shires but I pretty much get condensation in all my tents at one time or another. I think the no-see-um is to blame as it inhibits air flow. It really doesn't bother me much but the tent is a little short for me so I hit on the condensation. NO biggie and easily worth the trade out on the weight.”

“How long should I wait until contacting Shires? I ordered the double rainbow back on June 30 and haven’t heard anything back since getting the confirmation emails that day. The website says there’s a 3 week backorder on that model (it was 2 weeks when I ordered), so I’m wondering if I should wait a bit longer.”

“Henry is a good guy. If he says two weeks he means it. I will say that if you are in a rush for a specific "big trip" just ask if he can get you one sooner. I would not be shocked he could. If you are in no hurry (other than excited) then wait.”
