Considering a TarpTent by Henry ShiresView Messages“I was just wondering if anyone here has used any of Henry Shires products, especially the Squall 2 and Cloudburst 2? If so what did/do you think of them? I am trying to get into a lightweight (although not necessarily ULTRA-light)hiking mode. Any observations are appreciated.” 10:38:21 PM 7/10/07 “I have a Squall and it is my main tent when I take one. Heny Shires makes a good product. A few people on here have them.” 10:50:24 PM 7/10/07 “henry shires is a very popular model round these parts. ive been on group hikes were practically every tent was a henry” 11:05:09 PM 7/10/07 “I was on a trip like that with crash! It was kinda funny - what,,,, about 7 of us had one version or another of a Henry Shires. You'll like it, get one. Very storm worthy (when properly pitched) - i love mine - used in the Rockies and the Appalachians.” 11:11:29 PM 7/10/07 “If you want to read a lot of posts about tarptents go over to the Practical Backpacking forums and check out the "shelters" posts...Henry posts over there also...” 5:29:13 AM 7/11/07 “Do a search here on "tarptent" and you'll see a ton of talk about them. I love mine, and as long as they aren't calling for snow I use it year-round.” 5:45:54 AM 7/11/07 “Take a look at the Black Diamond Mega Light.” 5:51:08 AM 7/11/07 I have a HS Contrail “and as Roam states, (when properly pitched)work great ,22oz is nice on the back as well. Just a note ,they do need space to pitch properly. I'll be taking mine to Califorina here in a couple weeks for a ten day trip” 6:32:43 AM 7/11/07 “Wow DEJAVU Roam it just so happens I was on just sutch a hike. Somewhere in Pa. if my memory serves me well. 6:39:49 AM 7/11/07 “I love my Henry Shires....it is VERY weather worthy. Don't know what happened (may not have pitched the back of the tarp tight enough...) but after 8 hours of a driving rainstorm we awoke dry and comfy (unlike some of our bretheren. 7:07:05 AM 7/11/07 “I'll be joining the cult very soon. I ordered the double rainbow two weeks ago. Come on brown truck, get here soon.” 7:11:57 AM 7/11/07 “Unfortunately I can't read the posts on Practical Backpacking unless I register, and I can't register without an ISP email address. My wife set up our cable internet service, so I'll have to find out if she set up an email account or if the cable company automatically does that for you. Ya know, I can understand not allowing non-members to post on their forums, but not allowing non-members to even read the posts? On a "free" forum site no less? That leaves me kinda scratching my head in puzzlement...” 7:26:18 AM 7/11/07 “.... Lump sat alone in a boggy marsh....” 7:52:30 AM 7/11/07 “i liked that campsite, jackstraw. i also liked the fact that we were a 20 minute walk from a great little pub” 8:00:10 AM 7/11/07 “I have a Virga, Virga2 and Contrail by Hank. All are great. Kinda think I like the Virga best, though...” 8:24:25 AM 7/11/07 “cloudburst 2, it's my fave tent, holds 2 comfortable....3 impossible!! dry, and as my wife says, tooo airy...lol” 8:51:39 AM 7/11/07 “Great designs.” 8:54:36 AM 7/11/07 “I have the original Cloudburst and love it. If I were going to replace it I'd get the new Cloudburst design. I tested the newest one of Henreys...the "Contrail" and didn't like it at all. Too much fuss to pitch. Paige has the Contrail also and feels the same way. I like simple.” 9:09:15 AM 7/11/07 “Guess we're the only ones, but we quit using our Cloudburst because of condensation and a variety of set-up glitches.” 9:13:18 AM 7/11/07 “I have the Rainshadow 2...would hold three but it would be pushing it...Two are VERY comfortable with gear.” 9:14:27 AM 7/11/07 “I just ordered the Sqaull 2, but it hasn't arrived yet. I can't wait to try it.” 10:14:04 AM 7/11/07 One vote, for the Contrail !! “I've got the Contrail and love it. Best Solo Tarptent to date, IMHO. I had it out, in a recent Thunderstorm, and it didn't leak a drop, and I'm talking a good downpour too.” 10:21:13 AM 7/11/07 “I have the Squall 2. Great tent. Don't hesitate to buy one.” 11:31:34 AM 7/11/07 “I carry the Cloudburst2 and have total confidence in it. I have tied on additional guy lines on the sides for extra strength in windy conditions and storms are now just pure enjoyment.” 11:39:09 AM 7/11/07 ““.... Lump sat alone in a boggy marsh....” Roam Around Thanks. That's stuck in my head again now. ;) Ah, Tarptent City. Excellent hike. Mr. Shires would be pleased with that pic.” 11:48:47 AM 7/11/07 “I have the Contrail. So far I really like the tent (floor space, head room, weight), but I am not completely sold on the rear strut design.” 12:05:57 PM 7/11/07 “How do the tarptents compare to the Six Moons Designs products? I can't decide between a Contrail and the Lunar Solo. Any opinions/experience?” 12:14:26 PM 7/11/07 “Never used a six moons, but I like the look of them. There was six moons tent amidst the tarptent community in Jackstraw's pic above. It seem to have more headroom but otherwise be very similar. The tarptents appeared to me to be a simpler pitch, but i wasn't paying that much attention.” 12:51:42 PM 7/11/07 “CD, I thought you'd really love the contrail since you strut your rear around so:)” 12:53:12 PM 7/11/07 “Chili has a six moon i think. Had a good bit of condensation one trip...but it was understandable...heh” 10:29:36 PM 7/11/07 “I get condensation sometimes in the Henry Shires but I pretty much get condensation in all my tents at one time or another. I think the no-see-um is to blame as it inhibits air flow. It really doesn't bother me much but the tent is a little short for me so I hit on the condensation. NO biggie and easily worth the trade out on the weight.” 10:35:32 AM 7/12/07 “Why are you watching my a$$ Fumblefoot? :D don't answer that” 10:38:56 AM 7/12/07 “Solar eclipse, or is that lunar (moon)?” 10:43:19 AM 7/12/07 “No goofball, that was actually a reflection your cute shiny bald head. :) last edited: 7/12/07 11:23:56 AM” 11:21:10 AM 7/12/07 “That wasn't a reflection, merely a tattoo of your butt on my head.” 3:13:21 PM 7/12/07 “How long should I wait until contacting Shires? I ordered the double rainbow back on June 30 and haven’t heard anything back since getting the confirmation emails that day. The website says there’s a 3 week backorder on that model (it was 2 weeks when I ordered), so I’m wondering if I should wait a bit longer.” 6:07:24 AM 7/24/07 “LOL! It's he11 waiting, isn't it?” 6:11:02 AM 7/24/07 “Yeah...lumber...may I say it will BE WELL WORTH THE WAIT!” 6:12:16 AM 7/24/07 “Henry is a good guy. If he says two weeks he means it. I will say that if you are in a rush for a specific "big trip" just ask if he can get you one sooner. I would not be shocked he could. If you are in no hurry (other than excited) then wait.” 6:30:18 AM 7/24/07 “Yes, contact him. He's on-time and flexible.” 11:51:34 AM 7/24/07 “Looks like it will be shipped out on Monday. So hopefully I'll have it by next weekend. Come on brown truck get here.” 7:55:42 AM 7/27/07 “:-)” 8:25:48 AM 7/27/07 “which one did you get?” 9:24:48 AM 7/27/07 “double rainbow if you would have ordered from 6 moons, you would have had it by now.” 9:33:04 AM 7/27/07 “how much is 6 moons giving you on commission WK? ;-)” 9:37:55 AM 7/27/07 “zipo...i just love my tent and the support I have rec'd” 9:52:06 AM 7/27/07 “Shire's was good with the response. I got a reply about 10 minutes after I sent them the email.” 9:57:30 AM 7/27/07 “LOL..lumber I remember waiting for my Tarp tent......I finally found out the Brown Truck missed us on a Friday (just never made it) then told us it had tried to redeliver on Saturday....We got it though.” 11:32:20 AM 7/27/07 “LOL..lumber I remember waiting for my Tarp tent......I finally found out the Brown Truck missed us on a Friday (just never made it) then told us it had tried to redeliver on Saturday....We got it though.” XL400236 1:32:20 PM UPS knew you weren't going to use it anyway so why bother and get it to you on time” 11:42:49 AM 7/27/07 “Original cloudburst owns you all.” 11:45:08 AM 7/27/07
