A friend sent me a link on "MPG-CAPS" things you are supposed to throw into your tank to increase fuel efficiency. I tend to automatically think this kind of thing is BS and then try to keep an open mind anyway. Can anyone think of a reason I should take this seriously?

pretty much bs...

So now we utilize the fuel to carry the MPG-CAP™, in its dissolved state, to the combustion chamber, where the heat of combustion activates the chemical compound, and creates a very thin coating on the metal surfaces of the internal components within the combustion chamber.

I thought the whole idea behind proper ring clearance and proper wear on the pistons was a clean combustion chamber. Not one gunked up with who knows what.

We know that fuels are efficient to a point of 99.5%

Pedxing, with crap like this in the article, you have to ask?

Mythbusters has debunked this kind of stuff.

The human body is more efficient than gasoline. Gasoline engines are around 17-25% efficient, the remainder of energy is lost as heat which is why your car gets so hot. Let one of the physics nerds show you the math with the amount of energy in a gallon of gas.

That made no sense in the context of their article. I wondered if it was a typo or or something.

Anyhow - I did look into it. Independent testers found either a small increase in effeciency, no change or a small decrease in efficiency. Nobody not hired by the manufacturers found a significant improvement (i.e. one that would justify the cost or manufacturing energy behind the pills)

It's crap. Some researchers totally debunked them last year.

Hmm, that sounds suspiciously like "chance".
