Buying a New GPSView Messages“i am pre-authorizing jimmy san to talk all sorts of ʇıɥs about me for even thinking about asking this question, but can anyone suggest a good gps for international, as well as domestic use? everything here in gwangju looks the same, and the trail maps in the national parks arent the greatest last edited: 7/13/07 9:25:42 AM” 9:20:19 AM 7/13/07 “everything here in gwangju looks the same racist” 9:43:19 AM 7/13/07 “i mean the buildings” 9:44:41 AM 7/13/07 “Stick with Garmin, I've been pretty disappointed with both Magellan's I've had, especially software limitations that the company builds into them on purpose so you have to buy more accessories.” 10:23:32 AM 7/13/07 “thats what i figured” 10:41:34 AM 7/13/07 “GPSs are for wimps.......” 11:28:45 AM 7/13/07 “yeah right chinmusic, and how many do you have??? I have been really happy with my Garmin gpsmap60Cx.” 12:56:53 PM 7/13/07 “Did a couple posts get deleted? FTR, I was in no way insulted by Crash. It was an inside joke.” 9:52:11 AM 7/14/07 “I don't have a GPS and would have no clue as to what to look for in one. Plus why do you need one unless you like to go do the find the box thing” 9:56:14 AM 7/14/07 “why do you need one unless you like to go do the find the box thing” Ewker 7:56:14 AM 7/14/07 everything here in gwangju looks the same, and the trail maps in the national parks arent the greatest last edited: 7/13/07 7:25:42 AM” crash bang 7:20:19 AM 7/13/07” 5:00:36 AM 7/15/07 “Do they geocache in Korea?” 5:03:37 AM 7/15/07 “not that i know of. alto theres enough "treasures" along the trail in the form of discarded wrappers, its not really necessary” 5:09:12 AM 7/15/07 “I am looking to also buy a GPS and have been looking at Garmin Rino 130, Garmin Astro 220, Garmin GPS Map 60 csx, Garmin 530HCx GPS..............Has any one had any experience with any of these?” 5:43:27 PM 8/28/07 “Hey Fridge I have the GPSMap 60 csx and I have found it to work great. I took it with me when I did Meangreen's crazy bushwacking trip to RRG and I didn't lose signal at all. That was really surprising. The only time i lost signal the whole weekend was when we went into a cave. It can also be used in a vehicle for driving if you have the correct software. So far I have been very pleased with it!” 5:49:02 PM 8/28/07 “Sell it to me........windigrrl” 1:39:38 PM 8/29/07 “just get a compass and a good map. no batteries or clear sky/line of sight required. ;) what up Fridge!” 1:45:51 PM 8/29/07 “Once you have a good GPS, it's hard going back to the basics. I have so many more options with my GPS. Sorry Fridge, I'll keep it. REI has a good deal going on through Labor day.” 2:04:19 PM 8/29/07 “i'm old fashioned i suppose. I've looked at them and was "this close" to getting one a while back, but then I just don't see it. I've been on trips with people that had one too, i just don't see the 'need' for it. I'm also a cheap bastard too. :)” 2:34:34 PM 8/29/07 “Roam.I use to give classes on Compass and Map reading in the Military.I know how to navigate.............I was just wanting to buy something I don't have and say I own one.I am a Gear sluttttttttttttttt. okay I said it. actually I want one for Alaska next year.........it will be invaluable and very helpful with details and positioning. Roam I still like the Map and Compass though...because I have grown to trust this method. Especially if you know anything about declination angles and using one long distance. Military we used a Lensetic compass with 1/24 thousand maps and navigated with 6 and 8 digit grid coordinances.” 4:09:50 PM 8/29/07 7:13:54 AM 11/22/07 “I'm with Roam - I've never wanted to have to mess around with an electronic gadget on the trail. But if I did get a GPS it would be one you waer like a wrist watch, like a Garmin Foretrex/Forerunner.” 7:20:27 AM 11/22/07 “These are car gps units like the TomToms. I'd like to have one because I drive at least 50,000 miles a year but I have too many gadgets already with XM radio and two cell phone chargers. I just don't have enough 12v outlets. last edited: 11/22/07 7:25:10 AM” 7:23:35 AM 11/22/07 “OH GEE THANKS Crash....Now I am thinking about a new GPS...to replace the venerable 76S that I have” 8:16:00 AM 11/22/07 “Nigal, the Advantage is calling your name...” 7:49:05 PM 11/22/07 “I am thinking about getting the garmin astro” 7:55:23 PM 11/22/07 ““Nigal, the Advantage is calling your name...” Well I was hoping to stay with $150 or less, so if you're gonna sell me your s for that I guess I'll take it. Do you take Paypal? LOL! I'm really torn because I'd love a gps for the car but I'm getting just enough money for christmas to buy a couple big amps to put the bump in my trunk again. Tunes before gps.” 2:13:38 AM 11/23/07 Bump in the Trunk? “Oh yes, thump before gee-pee-ess. I still haven't moved my sub into my current daily driver, or my radio, even though both are now in the garage. I had an excuse when my wife was still using them in my old car, but when that car was totalled in July my equipment moved to the garage. Where it sits. Combo of lazy when I have the free time and not enough free time from all the things we do with the kids...” 8:57:26 AM 11/23/07 “Anyone know anything about the Garmin eTrex Venture Summit? I have a chance to get a new one with free software bundle for about $150.” 10:55:38 AM 12/03/07 “Amazon.com has the Garmin nvi 200 for $199 right now for use in an auto. I just bought one for my daughter and she loves it.” 12:11:21 PM 12/03/07 “Garmin auto models are excellent. I've a street pilot (?510) which I used for a 3 month road trip. I also left it on the roof of my car overnite in poring rain (by accident)-it still works fine! In contrast I bought a Tom Tom (forget which model) and used it from Boston to SC-and it broke after a weeks use. It wouldn't turn on at all so, I exchanged it at Best Buy for the Garmin.” 2:37:28 PM 12/03/07 “I've been thinking about getting a Garmin eTrex H for some off-trail snow exploring. Waterproof, pc-interface, and high sensitivity, for a hundred bucks. Mind you, I love my map/compass (and know how to use 'em), but for finding a remote, "never been to" place to camp after snowshoeing 10 miles with a pack on, well, I wouldn't mind knowing it was in my pack if I wanted it.” 2:47:36 PM 12/03/07 “That's not a bad price for the Venture Summit but it likely does not take the SD cards that allow for expansion of memory. There are newer Garmins that take the cards, but they cost more. eTrex models are small for portability, but they do not receive well under tree canopy or in heavy cloud cover. The Garmin MAP60CSX is top of the line with color display, electronic compass and altimeter, and takes the CD cards. It receives well under trees and in heavy cloud cover combined. It's pricey though. It runs around $500 on sale. Before buying go to www.gpsstore.com to compare units and capabilities against price.” 3:16:44 PM 12/03/07 “True Geo, it only has the fixed memory, but it has a few accessories that go along with it. Thanks for the link. I'm going to do a little research before Christmas.” 11:20:48 AM 12/04/07 “I really like my MAP60CSX. I can use it on the trail and in the car.” 11:38:41 AM 12/04/07 “Garmin 60 CX GPS Unit is just plain sweet! 50 routes and 1,000 waypoints, load map data, Install topo, marine, and street maps with pre-loaded microSD cards. Well this baby will do just about everything. I always know were I am and where I need to go.” 4:27:17 PM 12/04/07 “i lost my GPS in the grand canyon last week. i know where it was last seen but for the life of me i could not find it. for a while i thought the guys were playing a gag on me but this wasn't the case. i was a little upset at first but i remembered two things: 1. anything you bring with you backpacking should be something you are prepare to lose or have destroyed. 2. i was not prepared to let the loss of a gizmo i don't need ruin what was an otherwise perfect week of hiking in the grand canyon. that said, it would be lighter on the wallet if it had NOT gotten lost. ...so I am about to research a replacement. The Garmin 60Csx was an outstanding unit and I am inclined to replace it with the same thing. The reviews on the new Colorado units is less than great (crappy actually). anyone have any other units they have experience with? i liked the 60Csx because of it's maps (i knew how to make my own) and also the fast locking and accurate tracking. bummer is that i dropped case for the city navigator software that is locked to the GPS serial number so if i want the maps on a new unit i'll have to shell out the cash for the cd yet again... grrrr. this alone has me thinking i may want to look at other brands, but the garmin has been a solid unit.” 2:10:41 PM 3/19/08 “Yogi - the Garmin software licence is for two devices - so you should be able to upload it to another GPS. If not you can call them, from what I understand they are pretty helpful in cutting you a deal. i lost my GPS in the grand canyon last week. - does this count as irony?” 2:18:08 PM 3/19/08 “I have the Garmin 60Csx, and I just latched onto the DeLorme GPS which came with the software (topos). They also offer some free downloads from their site. The Garmin locks and tracks beautifully. The topo map is good, but there are a lot of roads that should be on it that are missing, including some interstates. The DeLorme loads fairly quickly, though not quite as quickly as the Garmin. The maps are good and seem fairly up to date, certainly more recent than the Garmin. What I don't like about the DeLorme is that you cannot put as much data on the SD mini card as you can on the Garmin. On the Garmin you can put the entire East Coast on a 2 gig card. On the DeLorme you can put a few states, so you need more cards if you want to use it over a wider area. Actually, I expect I will use both interchangeably.” 2:24:07 PM 3/19/08 2:30:16 PM 3/19/08 “lmao Y2... and THANKS for the tip. i did not know it was good for two units and this will save me major $$... the city navigator na maps are NOT cheap. i can't believe you lost yours in the GC as well the same week. Well if someone finds it I wish them happy trails... so turns the wheel of technology gizmos. on to something else... the reviews of the delorme said it was slow to pan, paint screens, etc and that the processor was underpowered. do you find this to be the case? i am tempted to buy a colorado from garmin despite the bad reviews... you know how these reviews go... believe almost none of what you read. i just hate the idea of taking it back to REI and making them eat it if the thing sucks. still, 6-hundo for a GPS is pretty steep, even if it does have 3d image data on it. i may just stick with toe 60csx... that unit is bound to go down as a "classic" success story.” 4:05:02 PM 3/19/08 “i have decided not to replace my lost GPS. let's see how long this lasts...” 3:03:29 PM 3/30/08 “Yogisan, Where did you lose it? I know of one found west of you.” 3:07:23 PM 3/30/08 “loL! i lost it on the darwin plateau in the grand canyon. garmin 60 csx” 8:37:22 PM 3/30/08 “at least that is where it think i lost it... i know it was somewhere between the intersection of the tonto trail and the boucher trail hiking up the boucher. i think it was lost on the darwin plateau because i recall setting it down when i had to get the tweezers out of my pack for captain jack to get the cactus thorns out of his leg.” 8:38:53 PM 3/30/08 “just get a compass and use good maps! ya don't need no stinkin GPS!!!!!” 10:12:30 PM 3/30/08 “i know. it wasn't even a "nice to have"... it was a "fun to have"... and it was a lot of fun.” 6:01:02 AM 3/31/08 “I just picked up a new Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx. Does anybody know where I can get free 24K maps to upload on to it?” 9:19:09 PM 7/07/08 “you have to pay for them or make them yourself.” 9:22:59 PM 7/07/08 “no, but if you find free ones, let the rest of us know please. I have that GPS and am very happy with it!” 11:00:36 PM 7/07/08
