Buying a New GPS

“I went in and picked mine up. Its a good thing I knew what I wanted - I went to EMS Friday afternoon and asked for the guy who knew GPS's the best. The guy was nice and wanted to be helpful but he knew nothing about this particular model. I mean NOTHING. In fact, when he took ot of the display case to demonstrate it - I had to point out that it wasn't even a Garmin.

here is a gift for all garmin 60csx owners. this is very complex but works well. it's how to make your own custom topo maps... exciting! i have made these for most backpacking trips i have been on and they kick a**. the process is very complex and involves a lot of steps/tricks/etc so if you are not willing to go through a lot of details you might just want to buy topo maps or ask someone to make them for you. i have my pc set up to do this on demand so it only takes me a few hours now but for a detailed map (with stream data/etc) it can take a few days. my grand canyon topo maps were spot-on accurate... it was scary.

“My Etrex Vista is kaput so I looked at the 60Csx and I looked at the Etrex Vista Hcx. It seems except for the display size and where the buttons are located and the weight there is no diff. Welllll the Vista is $100 less! Anyone know anything about these two units?”

“I have the Vista Hcx. It's my first GPS so I don't have anything to compare it to. I've had it since December and I am very happy with it. I've had no problems picking up satellites be it under tree cover, down in ravines or in my house.”

“i don't have the vista nor have i used it. the 60csx lets you plug in a micro sd card, which if you plan to use a lot of maps is really important. they use a lot of memory, especially topo maps and the city navigator driving maps. also the csx has a magnetic compass in it which is a nice feature. don't know about the vista. when i lost my 60csx in the grand canyon two years ago... i replaced it with the same unit. so i think highly of this. let us know what you get.”

“So does the Hcx Yogi that's what is so crazy. They seem to be the same gps in diff packages. The only diff I could find are the physical differences I mentioned above.”

“look pretty much the same to me. not sure if the external antenna helps the 60csx or not (or helps it to an extent worth $100). the screen on the 60csx is a -little- larger, but not much. it's probably a great unit, tango. i think this is the model chinmusic has so you might pester him for a review. i can only speak for the 60csx.”
