Whoopi Goldberg used her first day on the daytime chat show Tuesday to defend football star Michael Vick in his dogfighting case.

Goldberg said that "from where he comes from" in the South, dogfighting isn't that unusual.

"It's like cockfighting in Puerto Rico," she said. "There are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of the country."

The Atlanta Falcons quarterback pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting charges last week, admitting that he provided money for a dogfighting ring that operated on his Virginia property and helped kill six or eight pit bulls. Vick grew up in Newport News, Va.

Goldberg was selected by series creator Barbara Walters to replace O'Donnell, whose stormy tenure on the ABC program lasted less than a year.

In the Vick discussion, Goldberg served notice that she won't shy away from controversy.

Co-host Joy Behar looked horrified at Goldberg.

"How about dog torture and dog murdering?" Behar asked.

For many people, dogs are sport, Goldberg replied, and it appeared it took awhile for Vick to realize that he was up against serious charges.

"I just thought it was interesting, because it seemed like a light went off in his head when he realized this was something that the entire country didn't appreciate," she said.

Vick has been suspended indefinitely by the National Football League and will be sentenced on the dogfighting charges in December. He apologized and asked for forgiveness upon entering his plea in federal court last week.”

Authorities in Atlanta are looking for the persons responsible for setting dogs on fire, including a six week old puppy. Since the beginning of July shelters have seen too many dogs coming in burned. Pet rescue groups, such as PAWS, say they believe it may be a new trend.

Thursday six dogs were found burned, all in the same fashion. They've had a flammable liquid poured on them and then set fire Officials suspect it could be a gang initiation because the burned dogs are coming from a wide area. So they don't think it's the act of just one person.

We had a 16 month old child in the burn unit with burns on her feet, buttock, shins and the backs of the thighs. (they tend to draw up as they hit the hot water). The "man what done be stay there" was sitting the kid and when she cried (her diaper was wet) he was so drunk he filled up the tub and was dunking her in the hot water to make her shut up.

The only good thing we did was when we were in a GENPOP interview area we held up a couple of photos of the baby's injuries...his fellow inmates saw it.”

How else to explain his recent call to the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles to praise him for giving a "second chance" to Michael Vick - the man who spent 19 months in jail for torturing, electrocuting, and drowning dogs when not forcing them to fight to the death for his own amusement.

It's hard to understand the president's giddy enthusiasm...unless, perhaps, he believes that the police simply planted maimed dogs at Vick's residence, and buried other dead dogs on the grounds. After all, Mr. Obama has famously declared that there's a "long history in this country" of police abuse against African-Americans like Vick. And OJ Simpson.

But apart from that, the president expressed delight at Vick's return to the playing field because "so many people who serve time never get a fair second chance" - unlike recently released detainees from Guantanamo Bay, who are allowed to return to jihaddist terror campaigns.

The president also feels that "individuals who have paid for their crimes should have an opportunity to contribute to society again"...although in this case, "contributing to society" consisted only of carrying a football for $5.25 million a season at the same time that the president has indicated that anyone earning over $250,000 is an evil, selfish threat to society.

But in the end, Barack Obama is simply trying to teach us all a lesson about the importance of forgiveness - and here at Hope n' Change, we're embracing that lesson. And so we forgive the president for his idiotic support of a vicious dog-murdering sonofa#&%!$...and will think no less of him than we did before.”
