I just sent this
Vick has a multi year deal with Nike, here is my email to them.

I must write to you and register my dissatisfaction with your company not standing up and being counted as a leader with respect to Vick's indictment. How your company can stand by a man (and I use that term loosely) that competes and participates in dog fights and the cruelty to these animals is unbelievable. It seems to me that to stand by a man that enjoys animals ripping the flesh and fighting to the death is reprehensible. I have been a quite loyal customer of yours over the years, but unless I see your company stand up and be counted and say we will not stand behind a cruel, callous, heartless man, I will go elsewhere for my athletic shoe needs.

I hope you're a company that has a conscience and is not about the almighty dollar and damn everything else.

Thank you for reading this.

People can do wrong and not be convicted. I will not support a company that doesn't get that. Just look at Imus...not convicted of anything. I'm just tired of a lot of atheletes that are not grateful for what they have (not saying they didn't work hard for it) but it is a privilege to play pro sports, and I wish a few of these hot shot dunce heads would fall so others would realize that fact.

Tango... I am confused. Are you saying Imus should have been dismissed? Or that as he was not convicted He should have been dealt with differently? I think I know your answer, I just want to make sure I understand your statement. :?)

agreed. however, it has not been proved that he did wrong. you and i know he's probably a POS, but nike, as a large and influential presence in the mass media, have an ethical responsibility to not drop him based on "well, you and i know he did it"

Just look at Imus...not convicted of anything

they shouldnt have dropped him, either. very cowardly

I am voting to can his ass with my consumer dollars. He is involved either way and I want Nike to kick him to the curb. Now his position with the Falcons is a bit different, they should suspend him when he is indicted. Too much controversy for the team to deal with and they do have the ole moral turpitude clause and action detrimental to the team.

When I was a Deputy for Osceola County we raided a dog fighting place. It was one of the most heinous and horrendous things I've ever seen. It was disgusting and I am so glad I have will power.

People lose endorsement contracts for a variety of reasons. I would not be surprised if the Vick ads are pulled from the air. That takes a certain amount of time to occur. Bad publicity is not something that suits an endorsement contract.

By the same token, removing a portion of ones livlihood, {whether they _need_ it or not}, based solely on an accusation which has not been found to be true, {and an indictment is not a conviction} is prejudging the situation, IMHO.

It is _possible_ but I suspect very unlikely, that Vick was unaware of the things going on on the property.

I think there is a difference here between Imus and Vick. Imus was caught with his foot in his mouth. Vick is yet to be tried. Personally I think Nike could do better for a spokesperson. Not because of the indictment, but I think Vick's popularity is ebbing. But if they "drop him" _now_, they will be casting a vote for guilty. Rather, pull the ads, let the dust settle and reassess when it is over.

To publicly drop him immediately might actually be a grounds for appeal should he be found guilty. "Extensive publicity tainted the jury pool."

The extensive publicity is already there no matter if Nike drops him. It's on ESPN, the NFL channel, and CNN, not to mention the morning shows.

His job is to use his Reputation to sell Nike products. It doesn't matter if he gets convicted or not. If his reputation is spoiled enough that he can't perform his job then he should be terminated.

I just heard a big football supporter say,"Look he is an employee of a company, until he is convicted nothing should happen."

WELL BULLHOCKEY! He is a sports star, paid to bring customers into the stands. I wonder what would happen at every game if those pictures were held up for the world to see. Every time he approaches the end zone photos of those dogs are held up (ala the baseball player's salary behind home plate years ago)?

No he gets paid exhorbitant amounts to do what he does. You know a cop or other public official recieving less than an insignificant percentage of his payment would lose pay and their job if such a thing came out.

bacpac...I see your point, but I am pretty sure you do not torture your animals before you kill them.

There have been some pretty good discussions on sports talk radio out of B'ham on this. Evidently, this stuff is common in certain areas of B'ham. You have black callers calling in saying it's common and white caller saying they had no idea and are shocked. At the same time, you drive around in the countryside and see triagle shaped chicken houses everywhere. Most everyone knows that these are for cockfighting (c ockfighting in case the filter caught it). These are white areas. A caller asked where the white outrage was on that variety of animal fighting. I never heard anyone give an answer to that.

Bacpac it is idiots like you that give hunting a bad rap. The sportsman will kill as quickily and cleanly as possible. Hunting is a tradition that I hope endures. Comments like yours just gives the anti-hunting crowd the ammo they need to protest something that I love. I have never told this to any poster here, but I never wish to spend time with you in the wilderness.

I don't see why there would be any difference. I would hope that it is the act and not the person that is considered. I would however like to see a much higher standard in all pro sports. I know these guys are not real heros but kids across the country look up to them.
