"Pine Hills Nature Preserve

Preview: This is a passage over two backbone ridges above a deep gorge in the state's first dedicated nature preserve. Don’t be fooled by the easy pace with which this trail begins. The deep gorge that the entry trail leads to may be the most spectacular piece of natural landscape in Indiana. Dedicated in 1971 as the first state nature preserve, Pine Hills presents perhaps the finest examples of “incised meanders” in the eastern United States. Glacial meltwater formed two meandering streams—Clifty Creek and Indian Creek—which carved a deep gorge through the bedrock, leaving four narrow ridges or backbones that rise 70 to 100 feet. The pathway over Devil’s Backbone is a mere 6 feet wide, with a sheer drop-off on both sides. Caution should be used in this hazardous area. Two other geological features in the preserve are The Slide, a smooth patch on Clifty Creek created by constant rock slides, and Honeycomb Rock, a wall of sandstone where the two creeks meet. There is more to the preserve than rocks, however. When the last glacier receded thousands of years ago, Indiana had a Canadian-like appearance in which white pine, hemlock, and Canada yew trees prospered. These trees remain as prominent features of the preserve. Special Attractions: Turkey Backbone, Devil's Backbone, and Honeycomb Rock. "

I'm such a newbie....I was laughing but my buddy wasn't she was horrified as I was laying there laughing to death---anywho, I pulled a muscle in my neck-----so dependig on how it feels in the morning I may not get over to the preserve to check it out though I really want to. The bike is fine, thank goodness! Doncha hate it when those pesky trees move themselves into your path?
