Somone pointed out to me the other day that RIT dye has a product that when you wash with your clothes, will give you SPF protection for up to 20 washings. It's like $3 for a box of this stuff.....

Anyoen try it? I'm thinking of trying to find it around here to use.

I guess I don't really see the point of SPF clothing.

My 6-year old nephew has an auto-immune disorder that is triggered by the sun. He wears SPF clothing to prevent exposure to the sun. Last summer he was on a chemotherapy drug and heavy steroids. So far so good this summer!

And I'm guessing many folks who have had melanomas (including my mom and sister) would find SPF clothing useful.

That would be the point of SPF clothing. Its expensive, though!

SC, I don't know anyone who's used the RIT product. I will suggest it to my sister-in-law and see what she says about it. Not sure if the docs/nurses suggested it to her or not.

Expensive, but highly recommended by my Red Cross First Aid instructor:

My hiking shirt has an SPF rating. I am very sensitive and can burn through a cotton shirt. I prefer covering up to lathering up.

thanks sg....

I find when I do any high elevations, like in the sierra, I burn even through my clothes, and I figure this hopefully would help without having to buy the expensive clothes-----

Interesting. I have never had a problem, so I didn't understand.

the top of my head, especially gets burned, even through a hat, so I could wash my hat in it too.

I'll let you know how it works when I find and try it! :)

If you wore a super cool bandaner like me it would be easier to wash.

sc, I had to buy the shirts since I moved to AZ (from 50ft above sea level to 5200ft). I was wearing 50spf sun block and was on my way to melanomaville. I bought the Columbia fishing shirts with an spf of 30. They work great. I got them on sale of the net and they weren't that expensive. Gonna buy the pants now too. Wish I would have known about the Rit stuff. I'd have tried it. I buy Rit dye but have never seen the sun block stuff.

Here's a good site for some stuff. Regular tee shirts offer almost no protection from uva rays. They're the bad boys. http://www.sunprotectioncenter.com/Men-s-s/34.htm
