Neat place
Spent the weekend in Rabun Beach Campground outside of Clayton, Ga.

The Troop needed somewhere to do training for the older scouts coming up as leaders and get some of the new scouts some BASIC skills.

This is a NEAT place. If you want a park that is quiet, and really attractive for a car camping and day hike experience this is a great place to base from.

We got in Friday Night, and set up. The host is a great guy.

Temps at night....in the 50's (YEAH)!!!

Spent Saturday morning training, then cleared a trail that was covered with vines, branches and a slew of down trees. The scouts had a great day and they learned a little more about taking care of the land.

All in all a neat weekend....we are waiting till this fall to start hiking again.

How can it be quiet with a bunch of boyscouts there? ;)

SC...its really neat when you work the program. See most of my guys are pretty much Misfits. The "perfect people" had moved them or ignored them until they left the other troops. We are the "Troop of misfit scouts" but strangely our kids learn to work together, and become incredibly successful.

I have one kid who has extreme aspergers. His father really had to agonize about coming to us. This weekend was great, the kid enjoys ...archeology... and ended up digging up some old pottery from when the camp was a CCC camp in the 1930's. (side bar ...that was a neat idea, government money but YOU HAD TO WORK TO GET IT???)

The fun part was watching to look on the Ranger's face when he told us we could clean what we could of the trail to the beach. We ended up taking an OVERGROWN trail and making it wide enough (without killing the ground cover) for three people to walk side by side. And we cleared a bridge of trees (6 to 8" in diameter) to open the trail.

Now that is SCOUTING the way I was taught.

That is the area where the Foxfire books started isn't it? Very pretty area.

Don't know...but it is pretty...(LOL) and SC< I am thankful for troublesome Scout troops. It lowers the expectation and makes it just so much easier to impress people by what we do. (LOL)

So is the campground actually at the lake? (that may sound like a dumb question) but I have wondered that several times driving by.

It is about a half mile hike to the lake. Not a real hill for a climber you walk down, cross the road and there is a swimming area and a shower house etc. REALLY nice accomodations.
