Of all things to get lost in the mail...my federal income tax return. Had a refund coming and had not got it so I checked the status online and it did not show anything.

Looks like tomorrow is going to be a bad day...starting today.

Actually anytime I have filed e-file thru turbo tax I know within days whether it was received or not.
I am very happy with their service

I use turbo tax and have for years but I mail it...they wanted $17 to e-file and they can bite me on that. I used their e-file when it was free and loved it. I have never used an accountant except my CPA friend that specilizes in tax law but she is in DC now working with the movers and shakers.

It just got lost in the mail plain and simple. What gripes me is the guy asked me if I wanted to have a delivery certification added and I said no. This is a first time for me to have something lost in transit with the post office.

Check the IRS website next year when it comes to tax time. Some folks (like us) qualify for free e-file but it has to be entered through the IRS portal the first time. There are a ton of options to choose from, turbo tax among them. Only the Fed return qualifies for free, but you can always print whatever other reutrns you have and mail them.

It is my understanding that if you can only do the 1040 EZ on the IRS website and I always have deductions.

When you go to the IRS website find the link that takes you off site into the turbo tax portal, if that's the service you want to use. In order to get the free e-file you need to enter the turbo tax portal (for example). I have to use the 1040 form because of my profession. But I can do it on the website very easily.

Here's the "Free File" link from the IRS website.

Sticks,

I would call the IRS to make sure they haven't received your return. Nothing confuses them more than receiving two returns for the same ID# in the same year. Then, fill out another set of tax forms or send a copy of your original return. ONe would think that sending a letter of explanation with the resubmitted return would be a good idea. However, returns are automatically processed and such letters may be ignored.

Since you don't have any proof you mailed your return in a timely manner, you may get charged a late filing penalty. They will send you a penalty notice. However, if you've filed timely in years past, try writing a nice letter in response to the penalty notice to see if they'll give you a one time waiver of penalty. You may also be able to call about this but sometimes its better to write letter.

If you don't efile, you should send in paper returns certified mail, return receipt requested. This will CYA for lost mail.
