Freak Accident

“Lincolnton Police are classifying a Monday afternoon death at a car wash as a freak accident, a police official said.

Jolynn Banner, 59, was attempting to put in a car wash code at the Petro Express car wash on 2230 E. Main St. by opening her Pontiac Firebird car door and standing inside to reach the pad, said Lincoln County EMS Operations Manager Ted Mankowski.

"We think that her foot slipped off of the brake and she couldn't reach it in time," Mankowski said.

The car rolled forward and struck the brick wall of the car wash, pinning Banner between her car door and her car's frame. She received "crushing injuries to the neck," and died at the scene, EMS records say.

The car's window was rolled up when police arrived around 4 p.m. on Monday, and it is unclear why she didn't open it to reach the number pad, Lincolnton Police Chief Dean Abernathy said.

Mankowski said the accident should be a warning to others who attempt the same maneuver at ATMs.

"If you have to reach out of your car for anything, make sure the car is in park," he said. "A death like this one is rare, but it just goes to show that injuries can happen."
