Six degrees of Trail Talk

“Time to flesh out everyone's "six degrees" portfolios. For those not familiar, the theory goes that everyone knows everyone else within 6 other people, or can link themselves with an organization within 6 people. For instance, you connect yourself to the CEO of IBM because your friend has a cousin who was arrested by a cop who has a friend who is neighbors with the CEO of IBM. Since TT is our common connection, listing the people we know we are connected to instantly links us to everybody else's connections. It widens our "six degrees" network. Thought it would be an interesting social experiment...

So, who do you know you are connected to?


I'll start, I can think of three right now. 1. One of my neighbors works on the Hubble space telescope (he schedules the time slots based on the requests they receive from the scientists around the world).
2. His wife is a professor at the Naval Academy.
3. Six bosses up the chain from me is President Bush. I can shorten this link since I know several people that work directly for the Commissioner of Social Security, and his boss is the President.

“tech, I don't understand how #2 goes to #3. Also, does being in a "chain of command" count as opposed to actually knowing a person? In other words, it looks like you have a neighbor (which I assume you know) whose wife (also your neighbor, so you probably know her too) is in the Naval Academy, and separate from that, up your chain of command is the President? Why are #s 1 and 2 on the list with #3?

edit - Ok, I think the assumption with the chain of command is that each person on that chain personally knows their boss. I'm not sure that's accurate with a military chain of command, but I think I see where you got that.

“My 3 items are 3 seperate "chains", no relation (if you ignore that 1 and 2 are married; since both are friends of ours the marriage thing doesn't matter).

I don't think the game counts "I met him/her". It has to be a permanent connection, like a friend, co-worker, boss, the judge that put you in jail, etc. If brief encounters counted, like the cashier at Wal-Mart last night, then we could probably all link up with 1 or 2 links.”

By cultivating a relation with the radio host I could thereby move through those degrees of separation until I too might be able "not have sex" with Monica Lewinski. (Come to think of it...
