manBoy George Done Got Us In a Heap-A-Trouble
A contractor who I do business with tells me they are building sixteen large barracks at the Ft. Jackson Army Base in Columbia, SC. That's a basic training facility some of you may have experience with. They are also greatly expanding the military hospital there. The penalties for not completing the tasks by later this year are $50,000 a day. Looks like the Army is gearing up for something. I wonder what?

I like the idea, though I maybe wayyyy in the minority. Get the kids of some fat cats in the army and see what happens in the streets.

More concise insightful commentary like the above and I'm going to have to take back a lot of things I've said about you.

Come on Nigal?
Are you gonna play StoveStomper's game until you look even more stupid than he does? The draft won't be a one party decision by a long shot because:
1) The military will basically admit the Army is broken ie. rotations back every 18 months or so is taking a real toll on morale and retention.
2) The governors are already in semi-revolt about where their state National Guards are when they need them for natural disasters. Wait till the natives get restless because a week's wages won't cover a day's expenses.

For the rest of you.
Have you never heard the old saying;

Rich man's war, poor man's fight?

You're dreaming if you think this draft will be for everybody. The fat cats' children never fight. They get exemptions because they work in critical war industries or they're 4F. Or they just send their children to foreign countries (all expenses paid) till the war is over. Many fat cats in the USA have dual citizenships in other countries and so do their children. The courts won't go looking for them and the countries they will hide in won't extradite them. After the war any fines and jail time they might receive can be whittled down if you have the right lawyers, right judges, right procecutors, and plenty of money for appeals. If you watched the OJ Simpson trial you know that in US criminal justice system anyone can get all the justice money can buy.

LOL..libbies...been whining this for years....
\

Well in 2005 a study showed

The household income of recruits generally matches the income distribution of the American population. There are slightly higher proportions of recruits from the middle class and slightly lower proportions from low-income brackets. However, the proportion of high-income recruits rose to a disproportionately high level after the war on terrorism began, as did the proportion of highly educated enlistees. All of the demographic evidence that we analyzed contradicts the pro-draft case.

Even as vocal a war critic as Deputy Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin, D-Ill., has now acknowledged as much, telling CNN that the U.S. military is “making real progress.”

No need to get so paranoid. There has been a base closure initiative in place for several years. My guess is that these closures require other bases to beef up certain amenities, like barracks. Same thing is happening at an Army base nearby here.

Plus, the bases having makeshift buildings going back to the 1950s and earlier might have something to do with it.

From Sarge's link:
The Pentagon sharply rejected Monday a key general's assertion that a return to the military draft has always been "an option on the table" and should be considered.
"I can tell you emphatically that there is absolutely no consideration being given to reinstituting the draft," said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman. "The all-volunteer force has surpassed all expectations of its founders." ......

General Comment
There may or may not be a draft. That's why my thread title is the question "Anyone Feel A Draft?" Jump to your own conclusions. If you don't think there will be a draft counter with opposing viewpoints and site links. That's just what Sarge did. He didn't just go off on a "it's a libby conspiracy" tangent. He posted a link to a opposing viewpoint. [Although it's still hard to believe that a blind hog found an acorn twice on the same thread!]

Now on the other hand Nigal and Mutt are up to their same old character assassination tactics. Abe Foxman would be proud! But it doesn't matter. I've been fighting this battle since shortly after June 8th, 1967. I've heard it all. Truly a case of the little boy crying "wolf" way to many times.

I'm not engaging in "character assassination", SH88. You did that to yourself quite handily, and it's a matter of record here on TT.

When you've been outed as the same thing over and over for 40 years, that's a pretty good indication of what you are.

"Now on the other hand Nigal and Mutt are up to their same old character assassination tactics."

Oh come now SH, you are the #1 name caller on your threads. I'm just pointing out some ways you may get more constructive exchanges with others and not look so bad in the process. You have a habit of trying to start people off on uneven ground by limiting any opposing viewpoint to but a few categories (of which all are aimed to stroke your own ego). Generally anyone who disagrees with you is just stupid, don't want to be enlightened and stay asleep or just plain wrong. So either they agree with you or they don't in which case you are smarter, better informed and just plain right.

Phuck it's gotta be great being you!

Stroking Ego Now...Aaaaahhhh!
Feels good being me, the omnipotent TT Feugo Thread Maker and El Deciderso Supremo. With this massive TT audience and my diamond sharp intellect I will conquer thebackpacker.com and then the internet world!

Nigal I can play this game all day long. Done it in a thousand chat rooms for years.

Fact is I can't help it if the same few TT detractors (you included) have faulty logic concerning American foreign policy in the Middle East. I can't help if most of you have little or no understanding of Middle Eastern history. I can't help it if you do not understand the nature of Israeli duplicity in their dealings with the US and the rightful owners of Palestine. I can't help it if you in your paradigm don't want to know the truth. And the truth is I'm not particularly interested in helping change the minds of the detractors on these threads. I'm just looking for one or two lurkers who will go to the links I post and read objectively. I can banter back and forth with you and Mutt and anyone else all day long just to keep this thread at the top. And I do thank you each day for the "bumps" you give this thread. Keep on posting.
