Roan Mtn Anyone?

“Hey, I was wonderin is anyone interested in a weekend trip to Roan Mtn (TN)? I've never been but I hear its great. I was lookin at Sept. 22nd or possibly earlier if theres interest....I don't know much about it...except its over 6,000 feet..If anyone has any info. that'd be great too. :) On second thought, maybe the last weekend in August would be good... (the sooner the better)

I would like to go sweetpea but cannot go that weekend because we have my family reunion at my place.My family of about 48 shows up for a big campout type reunion.There will be tents everywhere,everything is cooked outside and my first cousin is a DJ and brings his sound system and we drink and piss all my neighbors off and then they call the cops and then they come and when they get there we have a big laugh because my little sister is one of them!

But I would be interested at an earlier date.”

“LOL. Spam that sounds fun! lol. Umm which weekend didn't work for you...the Aug 31 or the September 22nd weekend?

August 25th (next Sat) and Sept. 8 also look like they'd work for me ;) If we decide to go on the 25th I need to put up a trip page and nail down a route and buys maps...and...yeah, I'll spare you my list. I was thinking the AT starting from Garver's Gap might be neat? I hear its beautiful...I really need to consult a map though. I can't speak to a direction or number of miles etc etc. without one. Did you have any routes in mind?”

“Ya think the spring at the Stan Murray shelter might be dried up?”

“uggh I was worried about the water thing. PLEASE tell me theirs water down there..UGGh I guess I'll make inquiries. I was hoping TN wasn't having so much of an issue with this. When I lived down there we always got a lot of rain...at least is seemed like a lot more than we got in VA. lol.”

“Heck Sweetpea I thought we got alot of rain when I lived in Virginia!

That spring is the only water source that I know of on that stretch of the AT.

“uhhh looks like there is a spring at Grassy Ridge, another almost at Yellow Mtn. Gap if you go North on the AT from Carver's Gap.”

“I can think of 5 spots for H2O between Carvers Gap and Hump; Grassy, Stan Murray, Yellow Mt Gap, Bradley Gap, and Hump. Good luck on water. The only water may be at Yellow Mt Gap.

On a similar note,in the Smokies I do know some of the sources between Clingmans and Molly Ridge have dried up. The Supt at Grayson Highlands said water was a problem in backcountry. I'm sure its a problem elsewhere”

Thats why I was askin if you could be out Monday.

Which reminds me...if anyone interested in the roan trip wants to hop in the car after we hike from Carvers to 19E and drive somewhere else like Mt. Rogers or somethin...for an overnighter on Sunday...I'd be thrilled. :)

“in the east, icewater has water, cosby knob does but not enough to come out of the pipe. tricorner and false gap were great. guyot spring as well. moore spring was very very free flowing despite all other springs that were dry i saw in that western section. this status of the western section was 2 weeks ago, and the eastern section was just a week ago.”
