“I don't think I'm gonna make this at all now. My oldest has Girlscout camp and Monday there is school. Just too much logistics to throw onto my dad on top of having him keep them over night. Sorry Y'all. Maybe another time. Windi, Tuesday is still on though, and anyone else that felt like joining us for a Knobstone recon trip is welcome too.”

“Coyote - I looked at the map and yes, it looks like it would be about 12.5 miles on Saturday based on what you have planned. Could I talk you into changing it to a closer location for Saturday night. If so, I might be join you on Saturday. Take a look at the map and see if you can come up with a location that would put it at 10 miles?!?!”

“Change that, I will just leave my car at Mounds Beach Rd. That should be about 10 miles and it crosses the trail near Templeton Creek.”

“I did say school didn't I? Oops, they aren't in school, but it is their weekend to visit their mom, and with GS camp etc. This is going to be a cluster-ram any way I approach it. See, my family will not go anywhere near my girls' mom and everyone knows the girls are to be picked up be me or my family only. I have been very strict about this. Since i am working on Saturday, I don't quite know how to get my oldest picked up from GS then taken out to her mom's. This could turn very ugly so I need to be around to control things at least over the phone, and not on the dark side of the moon (i.e. "backpacking"). To make things even tougher I have to pick all 3 of them up from their mom's on Sunday in the middle of the day, so this trip would turn into an epic marathon for me to be back out to Raccoon Lake by Sunday afternoon all the way from Brookville. It's just too crazy. I'll be with ya in spirit though, ok? Maybe I'll get lucky and make it to hikinmachine's Deam trip... I'm always trying to squeeze in a bag night.

“Yeah, I do remember. I just walked on by, gave a wave, which no one saw, and kept going. lol. That's going to be my stopping point on this trip. Hey at least I get to get a day hike in and still keep the family commentments.

“I still have no clue how there was any trouble at that crossing. Coyote and I just marched across, and kept on truckin. We never even slowed down. How it turned into the big long fiasco is totally beyond me. LOL!”

“I'm still planning on coming. If something changes, I'll call Coyote or Windi. I won't be breaking any speed records on this trip as I'm going to have to take it a little easy. Due to a small medical procedure I'm not "supposed" to hike. Bah! And I promise I haven't been huffing paint...although it kind of looks like I have been.”

Since they are probably on the trail by now, it seems the most appropriate time to warn them about the unbelievable amount of spider webs that they will be busting through, lol

Late August/early September is the absolute worst time of year for that kinda thing down there. The west side is so full of the critters, we call it “Arachnoid Alley”!!!
I can almost hear the exclamations of joy and delight from here!!
Looking forward to hearing about how many times they got bitten and how many spiders they took in the face!!! Should be a good read!! Sometimes ya just gotta learn on yer own!!

“Oh man, Randall. 2 weeks ago we hiked the lowgap and Mariposa has this super cool dog that doesn't quite know what to think about me becase I'm noisy and walk in in the middle of the night, and then during the day I go down the trail waving to metal sticks out in front of me and cursing then wiping my face and arms off constantly. LOL! Them lil spidies was everywhere!”

“Bad News - we made it about 5 1/2 miles on the trail and Coyote took a fall and has broken his 4th finger/joint on his right hand. He is at the hospital right now having it looked at.
We didn't have much of a problem with spiders or webs along the trail. The trail did need some maintance work. There were lots of downed trees.”

“Ouch! Sorry to hear it. Did anyone continue, or all leave? Hope all is ok with him soon.”

“Chin and Mariposa continued on after we got my car and got coyote in. It happened about a mile away from where Garr Hill Rd crosses the trail. There happen to be a couple of guys there fishing and one of them gave me a ride to my car which was in Mounds state Park near where the trail crosses Templeton Creek. I had left it there so I would be able to come home tonight. Coyote was going to hike the last 4 miles to get to my car, but I'm glad he didn't. I think he was too after the fact. I haven't heard anything from him as of yet, but I think he might need surgery on his hand.”

“SURGERY?! Holy crap! Well now I really wish him a speedy recovery!

“Hhhmmm I wasn't there when it happened but Mariposa was.”

“It was incredibly dry there. Places where water would normally be running, there was nothing. Not even the crossing at Templeton Creek.”

“Eek. Guess you all had to drink the dead people water from the lake huh?”

“Coyote and Chinmusic had cached water Saturday morning.
Coyote update - I talked to him last night and it looks like he broke his third knuckle on the 4th finger on the right hand. He as it in a cast right now and will go to the Hand Center on Tuesday to have them look at it to see if he needs surgery.”

“Dry creeks, broken knuckles ( surgery), noisy motor boats, people getting lost ( march hike) and spider web busting.. the ol Adena Trace Trail is becoming the Bermuda Triangle of trails.... but we still love it! Thanks Randall for introducing us to this lovely piece of Indiana.

That's bad news for Coyote, I hope everything comes out well for him.
Yeah, they are in a pretty good drought situation down there now, but there is plenty of water in the lake! Chin has been on most of the trail before, but he has been known to get lost in the past. I have changed my cell phone number and even if he had my new number he may not get a good signal on the west side. I might try calling him later on to see how things are going.

“LOL...as I was reading the posts that happened while we were out I had a good laugh when it came to Randall's warning about the spider webs. I don't think I've ever hiked anywhere with THAT many webs. It was work. We took turns busting through them. I can't wait to see Chin's TR. I was going to do one but I'll hold off and throw my two cents in if he forgot anything.

“Mugsy (TickMagnet) and I made it home safely. He is currently be thoroughly bathed in the back yard. No tub for him today......

No ticks this time for Mugsy but boy did was he LOADED with "hitchhikers". He earned the trail name "Velcro" on this trip. I think Mariposa might have a pic of his condition.

“BTW I saw Coyote's X-Rays. He broke his finger just above the knuckle. It's not a clean break and is off center, so I'm thinking they are going to have to put some pins in. He goes to have it looked at tomorrow by the Specialist.”

“OOHH! Poor Coyote! I'm so sorry. I knew it looked ugly after the fall. Is his leg ok? It looked like it was a little banged up. I'd expect it to be a bit bruised and sore. I sure hope it's not considering what he is experiencing with his finger.”

I talked to Coyote this afternoon. He's glad, but disappointed, he left the trail. As windi posted, I too fear pins will be in order.

As I was informed on my first trip here back in October, there have been a number of people who have drowned and never been recovered from the lake.
