Silnylon field repairView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 10 of 10 messages posted.
What do you carry? “What's the best thing to carry to repair silnylon in the backcountry? Do they sell little patches or tubes of sealant? I mean, seam grip won't work on silnylon, right? I have some extra material and needle and thread but would prefer a small tube of silicone-based sealant that I can use to glue in the field. Suggestions? Known products? Thanks.” 9:32:14 AM 8/24/07 “duct tape! if you can't fix it with duct tape, just throw it away! ;)” 9:33:34 AM 8/24/07 “I think Silnet might be the product you are thinking about in the small tubes. I've never tried it since I've used tubes of silicone caulk from the hardware store to seal tarps and other items.” 9:36:42 AM 8/24/07 Silnet... “sew the rip together, then squeeze it out onto the seam and use the supplied brush to spread the silicone over the needleholes and seam....place it in the sun, and it will smooth itself out as the sun heats the material... I've used it to seam seal tents of regular ripstop because of the way it soaks into the needleholes and thread, then smooths out so neatly. http://www.backpackinglight.com/backpackinglight/images/items/SilNet-Silicone-Seam-Sealer.jpg last edited: 8/24/07 9:54:27 AM” 9:52:19 AM 8/24/07 “Right on. Thanks. I will have to pick some up. Looks like it is by the makers of SeamGrip? Man, I love SeamGrip...” 10:16:39 AM 8/24/07 “I concur with the esteemed SuperTroll” 10:33:21 AM 8/24/07 “ok, who carries a bottle of that stuff when they backpack? not i. use duct tape. use the sinklet whten you get home.” 9:18:34 PM 8/24/07 “Not a bottle, a tube and not a full tube, a used tube from the last seam sealing...really depends on if the trip is an overnighter or a week long...might end up using BOTH.” 5:51:53 AM 8/25/07 “I've got to do that to. I noticed a small 1/2 inch rip in the floor of my tent on this last rip. The granite is tough on the bottoms when you don't use a ground cloth.” 6:28:00 AM 8/25/07 “prolly could use it as a fire starter too.” 7:09:47 AM 8/25/07
